Gayathri Iyer (also known as Urmila Gayathri) is an Indian film actress and model from Kerala, who has acted in Kannada, Telugu and Bengali films.
Iyer was born in Tamilnadu and brought up in Kochi with her roots from Tirunelveli. Her mother tongue is Tamil. Iyer started modelling in her first year of Mechanical Engineering. Besides acting, Iyer is also passionate about dancing. She has been a student of Bharatanatyam since her school and college days. She has undergone training for hip-hop and contemporary under lollipop master. She has also undergone training for taekwondo, the Korean martial art.
It started with college fashion shows which led to inter-college fashion show competitions. Soon she got noticed by coordinators and casting directors in Kerala. Subsequently, she did print ads and later TV commercials of well known national and international brands. She also walked the ramp in Bangalore for several fashion labels. After establishing herself as a model, she shifted her focus to acting and films.
Iyer has also appeared in television commercials such as Garnier, Pantene, Vivel soap, Big bazaar, Orysa oil, Catch Masala, ITC Bank, Airtel Digital TV, ParleG, Prince Jewellery, Travancore Jewels, Easyoffbang, Luminous Inverters, Nalli Silks, Kalamandir sarees, Colgate Max Fresh, Yamaha Dream Rider, Vanitha Magazine Cover, SM Silks, Cool Lips.
Her first notable film in Kannada was Namo Bhootatma, a remake of the Tamil film Yaamirukka Bayamey, produced by Eldred Kumar of RS Infotainment and starred Komal and Harish Raj as the male leads. Namo Bhootatma ran for 100 days in Karnataka and was well received by the audience.
