Gasum Oy is an integrated gas company located in Espoo, Finland. It is the transmission system operator of the natural gas grid of Finland, and also the natural gas importer and seller. Gasum refines biogas in Finland and Sweden, and imports, transfers and delivers it for energy consumption, industry and transport. Gasum owns 12 biogas refineries in Finland and Sweden, and is the largest processor of biodegradable waste in the Nordic countries. Gasum’s subsidiary Skangas is the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) operator in the Nordic countries.
Gasum is owned 100 percent by the Finnish state, after Gazprom sold its 25 percent share of the company in the beginning of 2016. Gasum owns 51 percent of Skangas’ transmission grid business. Gasum employs approximately 310 persons. The head office is in Espoo, Finland. Other offices in Finland are in Helsinki, Hyvinkää, Imatra, Kotka, Kouvola, Lohja, Mäntsälä and Tampere. Gasum’s CEO is Johanna Lamminen. Lamminen began in the position in May 2014. The head of Gasum’s board of directors is Juha Rantanen.
There are over 20 gas stations in Finland from which compressed natural gas (CNG) can be fueled. Some of these also offer LNG for heavy transport. Gasum has promised to build 35 new CNG stations in the next ten years. Building CNG Stations outside the current infrastructure is also possible. This involves producing gas in a local biogas refinery and delivering it as LNG.
Gasum acquired 51 percent of Skangas’ LNG distribution from Lyse. The deal is part of Gasum’s larger strategy, with the aim of improving LNG’s availability in Finland. Skangas started their LNG business in 2011.
Gasum expanded into the Swedish market in 2016 by acquiring Swedish Biogas International. After the deal Gasum became the largest biogas producer in the Nordic countries.
Gasum’s strategy has four parts. These are promoting sustainability, the sale of gas with a competitive price, developing a smart gas systen, and creating a new Gasum. Its vision is to lead the Nordic gas ecosystem.
