Eleanor Wong (playwright)


Eleanor Wong (Chinese: 王少研; pinyin: Wáng Shǎo Yán) is a playwright and poet in Singapore. She is an Associate Professor of Law at the National University of Singapore, where she is Vice Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Legal Skills Programme. She is also a member of the Remaking Singapore Committee.

A graduate of the NUS Faculty of Law as a Public Service Commission Merit scholar, Eleanor Wong won the Best Oralist (Championship Round) at the prestigious 1985 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, where she was a member of the victorious NUS moot team. Eleanor started her career with the Commercial Affairs Department, prosecuting complex commercial and securities frauds. She obtained a masters in corporate law from New York University in 1990 and practiced in the New York office of Coudert Brothers, returning to Singapore in 1992.

Wong also provided communications consultancy and held several top management portfolios within the television production arena. She has anchored a television current affairs show After Hours, and used to host a radio programme, Sex, Rights & Videotape. Wong is also a trained lawyer and has worked as a prosecutor and an international finance lawyer. Wong also serves as a mentor on the playwright development platform Watch This Space, spearheaded by director-playwright Chong Tze Chien, where she first mentored teacher and playwright Lucas Ho. Wong joined NUS in 2002 as Director of the Legal Skills Programme.
