Columbia Records is an American major record label owned by Sony Music Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, the United States division of Sony Corporation. It was founded in 1887, evolving from an earlier enterprise called the American Graphophone Company, the successor to the Volta Graphophone Company. From 1961 to 1990, Columbia's releases were released outside North America under the name CBS Records to avoid confusion with EMI's Columbia Graphophone Company. Columbia is one of Sony Music's three flagship record labels, alongside RCA Records and Epic Records.
Artists who have recorded for Columbia include AC/DC, Adele, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Dave Brubeck, David Bowie, Mariah Carey, Johnny Cash, Miles Davis, Neil Diamond, Celine Dion, Bob Dylan, Earth, Wind & Fire, Duke Ellington, Pink Floyd, Erroll Garner, Billy Joel, Beyoncé, John Mayer, George Michael, Shakira, Frank Sinatra, Ray Conniff, Bessie Smith, Bruce Springsteen, The Clash, Barbra Streisand, Paul Whiteman, 50 Cent, Andy Williams, Pharrell Williams and Harry Styles.
