China Review International, subtitled A Journal of Reviews of Scholarly Literature in Chinese Studies, presents English-language reviews of recently published China-related books and monographs from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Europe, the United States, and elsewhere. It is multidisciplinary in scope and international in coverage, designed to enable sinologists to keep abreast of cutting-edge scholarship in Chinese studies.
The journal was established in 1994 by Roger T. Ames (University of Hawaii) who was at that time director of the UH Center for Chinese Studies, where its editorial office was located. In 2008, the editorial office moved to the UH Confucius Institute.
China Review International appears in two issues each year published by the University of Hawaii Press. Its first electronic edition appeared in 2000 on Project MUSE.
