Cartoon Network (CN) is a Philippine cable and satellite television channel created by Turner Broadcasting, a unit of Time Warner, which primarily shows animated programming. The Philippine version is a branch of Cartoon Network Asia, and broadcasts exclusively in the Philippines.
Ted Turner, an American mogul and entrepreneur, bought the pre-May 1986 films of MGM, also including pre-August 1948 WB cartoons and films, and the library of the MGM Cartoon Studios (since 1937 and shut down in 1957). While he managed to broadcast on TBS, WTBS17 (known as WPCH-TV) and TNT. He bought Hanna-Barbera since 1991 due to Great American Broadcasting's debt. He launched Cartoon Network in America in October 1, 1992, also the release of Tom and Jerry: The Movie in Germany. Later, he launched international versions of CN since 1993 and started on 1994, CN Philippines was born along with Cartoon Network Southeast Asia. On 1996, Time Warner merged with Turner, due to the library of WB was there, Turner stayed as a board of directors until 2006 or 2007.
Cartoon Network Philippines was formerly part of Cartoon Network Asia. It started broadcasting on September 1, 1995 as the dual-channel TNT & Cartoon Network, operating from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with Turner Classic Movies, formerly TNT, taking the remainder of the daily schedule. It originally aired only Hanna-Barbera cartoons such as The Yogi Bear Show, Top Cat, and The Flintstones. Cartoon Network is the first cartoon cable channel in the Philippines, and while Disney Channel launched in 1996, and Nick in 1998. In 1996, the channel started to air MGM cartoons, such as Tom and Jerry, Droopy, and Spike and Tyke. Following Time Warner's purchase of Turner later that year, the channel added Warner Bros. shows, such as Looney Tunes and related cartoons, to its programming in 1997. In 1998, Cartoon Network started to air its first original shows: Space Ghost Coast to Coast and The Moxy Show. The latter was soon cancelled, however.
