Campolattaro is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Benevento in the Italian region Campania, located about 60 km northeast of Naples and about 15 km north of Benevento. It is part of the historic greater Sannio region ( at foothills of the Appenines) which extends through the area and its descendants are of the ancient Samnians-Campanians
Many descendants of the town emigrated to the United States (including the parents of the author of this page, Michael A Massa and his family including Ray Massa; Luciano Nardone) -and had settled in industrial areas such as Bellaire, Ohio, Waterbury, Connecticut, Coppel PA., Philadelphia, as well as other eastern Ohio / Western Pennsylvania coal regions toward the latter 19th century and 20th centuries.
Further descendants of the area left for areas of South America (Argentina), Canada and Australia in the early 20th century
The city of Campolattaro is estimated to be approximately 1,200 years old, buttressed by a small hilltop "castle" built around 1100 A.D.
In the 15th century, the Pope visited Campolattaro; the city has lived under the occupation of various entities through the centuries, from the Normans to the Germans in WWII. The Castle within the 'commune' served as the town fortress and military overlook during times of attack through the centuries. It is now a tourist attraction and bed-n-breakfast.
The patron saint of Campolattaro is St Sebastian, for which the town church is named. The community's chapel and cemetery are named after the "Madonna del Canale" which maintains that the Blessed Virgin appeared in the nearby area during the Middle Ages.
The city also famously serves as the namesake of a well known contribution to Italian cuisine, the popular dish "Vermicelli alla Compolattaro" originated in the municipality. It was conceived by and a favorite of the Marquis of Campolattaro in the 14th century.
A recent boom in tourism exists as part of the construction of a lake preserve and agri-tourism in the region.
