Campbell Slemp


Campbell Slemp (December 2, 1839 – October 13, 1907), was an American Republican politician, and a United States Representative from the 9th District of Virginia from 1903 to 1907, during the 58th, 59th, and 60th Congresses.

Born near Turkey Cove in Lee County, Virginia, he attended Emory and Henry College in Emory, Virginia. In his early life, he pursued agriculture and private real estate business.

During the Civil War, Slemp served in the Confederate Army as a captain and lieutenant colonel of the Twenty-first Virginia Battalion, which served in the Virginia and Kentucky border region. He also served as colonel of the 64th Virginia Mounted Infantry, but he was relieved of command for disobeying orders.

In 1879, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, where he served until 1882. As a leader in the Virginia State Republican party, Slemp made an unsuccessful bid for Lieutenant Governor in 1889. In 1903 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served until his death in 1907.

Following Slemp's interment in the family cemetery in Lee County, Virginia, his son C. Bascom Slemp was selected to fill his Congressional seat. He served as the United States Representative for the 9th District of Virginia from 1907 to 1922.
