Bagnara Calabra (or simply Bagnara) is a commune (municipality) in the Province of Reggio Calabria in Calabria, southern Italy. It is located on the hills facing the Tyrrhenian Sea on the southern tip of the region, about 100 kilometres (62 mi) southwest of Catanzaro and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) northeast of Reggio Calabria.

The first organized village which we have historical proof, it is around 1085 a.C with edification of the "S. Mary's V.G. and XII Apostles Abbacy Nullius" ordered by Roger I of Sicily.

Other historical assumptions supported of indirect proofs let dating much more back on time, until in being directly connected with Mamertini (sons of god-war Mars), in follow to the First Punic War events. In supporting this theory around 1800 have been discovered and documented in this area ancient coins with Mars effigy.

The Roman's presence is even historically proven, since the ancient Via Capua-Regium built on 132 B.C,it past even through Bagnara's territory.

During the Roman's era, the village was known as "Balnearum" where at that time springed a thermal harbour, used by Romans.

Others substain that Bagnara was founded by Phoenicia around VIII century B.C,but there's not any archaeological proofs in supporting this theory.

The village was almost completely destroyed because of 1783 Calabrian earthquakes, which Bagnara was even hit by tsunami. It is recorded as the most powerful on the area, killing 50% of population, being even the reason which the Abbacy Nullius is collapsed. The only evidence left of a late-eighteenth century building , it is the Carmine's Church, which it was rebuilt after the earthquakes.

On the past the name was only Bagnara ,but after 1861 and unification of Italy ,it was changed in Bagnara Calabra to make it different in comparing with Bagnara di Romagna.

Bagnara was even heavily hit by 1908 Messina earthquake .
