Cricket, rugby union, rugby league & netball are the preeminent sporting rivalries between Australia and New Zealand. Otherwise notably, respective national teams have competed in indoor bowls, basketball, soccer, field hockey and touch football. Regular cross-Tasman competition occurs between domestic teams in men's rugby union, rugby league, soccer, and basketball, and also women's netball.
From 1963 the two countries have competed at the Netball World Championships and from 1998 at Commonwealth Games in that sport with both nations consistent rivals for first and second place. The New Zealand Silver Ferns and Australian Diamonds are fierce rivals and matches are often very close. There have been four notable matches between them that have gone into extra time. This occurred at the 2011 Netball World Championships, and double extra time was required for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games final – this made the 2010 game the longest in netball history. Since 2010, both the Silver Ferns and Diamonds compete for the Constellation Cup. The semi-professional ANZ Championship involves five domestic sides from each country, and has taken place annually since 2008.
The Australian cricket team first toured New Zealand in 1878 and recognised first class Test cricket between the respective national teams commenced in 1945–46. The underarm incident of 1981 stands as memorable for bringing Australian cricket into infamy and causing anger in New Zealand as well as being remarked upon by the respective heads of government. The two nations have exclusively and directly competed for the Trans-Tasman Trophy in test cricket since 1985–86 and for the Chappell–Hadlee Trophy in ODI cricket since 2006–07. They have competed at Twenty20 internationals and tournaments since their first such match occurring on 17 February 2005.
