Alex Story (politician)


Alex Story is a politician and retired English rower. He rowed in the British men's eight at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and is an active member of the Conservative Party.

Story was on the Great Britain rowing team for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, competing in the men's eight which finished second in the B final. He retained his place for the following year's world championships in Aiguebelette where he finished fourth.

He rowed for Cambridge against Oxford in The Boat Race of 1997 and 1998. In the former he was the heaviest man competing and was widely credited with having been the difference between the two crews. His 1998 crew broke the course record, which they still hold.

In 1994, Story was Indoor World Record Holder with Sir Matthew Pinsent and Sir Steve Redgrave.

He also won the European Championship

A back injury ended Story's career early

He has subsequently been active in the Yorkshire Conservatives and fundraising for local charities. In the 2005 election he contested Denton and Reddish and in 2010 constested Wakefield, both times coming second.

In 2014 he was placed second on the Conservative party list for the Yorkshire and the Humber European elections; however, only one member of the Conservative party was returned.

In the 2016 referendum he campaigned for Britain to leave the European Union.
