Abellio operates public transport services in Europe, with both bus and rail networks. It was founded as NedRailways in 2001, before being renamed Abellio in October 2009. Abellio is the international arm of the Dutch national rail operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

Abellio is the owner of bus company Qbuzz which operates buses in the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Utrecht. Qbuzz also has a minority share in HTM Personenvervoer.

In February 2015 Abellio won the contract of the Province of Limburg to provide for the entire public transport (buses and 4 regional rail lines) from 2016 up to 2031. Due to unfair behavior of Abellio during the tender for the contract, the contract was withdrawn, while the company Arriva received the contract. Abellio had obtained secret information of competitor Veolia through a former employee of Veolia which was hired by the daughter company of Abellio, Qbuzz.

From 2016 Abellio will operate the railway line between Gouda and Alphen aan den Rijn.

Abellio operates several regional railway lines in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as owning several bus companies throughout Germany, through Abellio Deutschland.

In November 2013, Transport Scotland announced that Abellio, Arriva, FirstGroup, MTR Corporation and National Express had been shortlisted to bid for the new ScotRail franchise. In October 2014, the franchise was awarded to Abellio.

In April 2015, Abellio ScotRail commenced operating the ScotRail franchise.

On 6 September 2015, Abellio ScotRail commenced operating services on the Borders Railway.

Abellio entered the UK bus market in May 2009 purchasing the Travel London and Travel Surrey businesses from National Express and rebranding them Abellio London and Abellio Surrey in October 2009. Both operate in the South East of the United Kingdom.
