The 2016–17 Japan Figure Skating Championships were held in Osaka in December 2016. It was the 85th edition of the event. Medals were awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing.

The senior competitions took place on 22–25 December 2016 at the RACTAB Namihaya Dome, Kadoma City, Osaka.

Uno won his first national title in the absence of Yuzuru Hanyu, who withdrew due to the flu.

* Hanyu withdrew due to influenza two days before the competition.

Miyahara won the national title for the third year in a row.

The junior men's singles, ladies' singles, and ice dancing competitions took place on 18–20 November 2016 in Hokkaido. The junior pair skating competition was held during the senior National Championships the following month.

The Japan Skating Federation selected skaters for international competitions in the second half of the 2016–17 season based on the results of the National Championships, as well as international ISU-sanctioned competitions. It published its list of entries on 27 December 2016.

The 2017 World Figure Skating Championships will be held in Helsinki, Finland, from 29 March to 2 April 2017. The event will also determine the number of spots per discipline that countries will earn for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The 2017 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships will be held on 14-19 February 2017, at Gangneung, South Korea.

Commonly referred to as "Junior Worlds", the Junior World Figure Skating Championships will take place at Taipei City, on 14-19 March 2017.

The Asian Winter Games was held in Sapporo and Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan, on 19-26 February 2017. Within the Winter Games period, Figure Skating events will take place on 23-26 February, 2017 at the Makomanai Ice Arena in Sapporo.
