Venus Williams was the defending champion, but she lost in the third round against Jelena Janković.

Amélie Mauresmo won her first (and only) Wimbledon title, defeating Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final, 2–6, 6–3, 6–4. It was her second and last Grand Slam title, having won the Australian Open earlier in the year; on that occasion, Henin-Hardenne retired due to a stomach bug. It was the first Wimbledon final since 1999 not to feature either of the Williams sisters.

With Serena Williams declining to enter, and her sister Venus being knocked out in the third round, the 2006 Championships were the first since 1999 in which neither of the Williams sisters reached the final.
