Thomas Johansson (SWE) defeated Marat Safin (RUS) 3–6, 6–4, 6–4, 7–6(7–4) in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 2002 Australian Open. Johansson became the first Swede to win the Australian Open since Mats Wilander in 1988.
