Thomas Johansson (SWE) defeated Marat Safin (RUS) 3–6, 6–4, 6–4, 7–6^(7–4) in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 2002 Australian Open. Johansson became the first Swede to win the Australian Open since Mats Wilander in 1988.
