Yevgeny Kafelnikov was the defending champion, but he was defeated by unseeded Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten (ranked no. 66) in the quarterfinals.
Kuerten went on to win the tournament and as well as his first ATP title, defeating Sergi Bruguera in the final. At the time, Kuerten was the second-lowest ranked player to win a Grand Slam and the first Brazilian. As a result, Kuerten moved up to number 15 in the rankings following his win.
