Steffi Graf was the defending champion but lost in the semi-finals to Zina Garrison-Jackson. This was the first time since 1986 US Open that Graf did not reach the Grand Slam final (she missed the 1987 Australian Open due to travel issues), ending a record 13 consecutive major finals.
Martina Navratilova won in the final, 6–4, 6–1, against Garrison-Jackson. This would be Navratilova's 18th and last Grand Slam singles title.
