Angel Mateo Canavery (1850–1916) was a lieutenant colonel of the Argentine Army. He served as lieutenant in the 1st Regiment, taking part in the expeditions against the Indians during the Conquest of the Desert.
Throughout his military career he participated in civil conflicts and faced the fearsome Chiefs Juan José Catriel and Manuel Namuncura, being honored by the same cacique Catriel with a poncho.
Angel Mateo Canavery was born 21 September 1850 in Buenos Aires. Born into a military family, his brother was Colonel Tomás Canavery, a hero of the Battle of Valentinas Lomas during the Paraguayan War. His sister, María Juana Canavery was mother of General Enrique Mosconi.
Angel Canavery was descended from a traditional family of Buenos Aires of French, Italian, Basque and Creole origin. His great-grandfather, Juan Canaverys was an Piedmontese who participated in the May Revolution of 1810. Ángel, his parents and brothers Tomás, Justino and Juana had lived in the neighborhoods of Monserrat and San Telmo.
On April 3, 1880 Ángel Canavery was married in the parish to Mercedes Montero, daughter of Apolinario Montero and Julia Rondó (possible granddaughter or relative of José Rondeau). He and his wife did not have children, in 1898 Canavery and Mercedes Montero, were godfathers of baptism of Carmen Canaveri, daughter of Saturnino Canaveri and Carmen Canavery (cousins in third grade of Ángel Canavery).
