The Jel Sert Company is a privately held company based in West Chicago, Illinois, United States. Established in 1926, its primary products are snack foods and beverages.

The Jel Sert company was named for its original product, a gelatin dessert mix named by combining the words "jelly" and "dessert". In 1929, Jel Sert created a powdered drink mix called Flavor Aid. These remained Jel Sert's flagship products until the 1960s when the company acquired the Pop-Ice company and its line of frozen ice pop desserts. Later that decade, Jel Sert introduced Fla-Vor-Ice, another freezer pop, to complement its Flavor-Aid line. Fla-Vor-Ice quickly became the leading freezer pop brand in the United States.

In 1991, the company launched the MONDO line of juice drinks and with it a promotional tactic involving the recycleability of their plastic container over conventional individual boxed juice containers.

Otter Pops were acquired by the company in 1996. Similar to Jel Sert's other freezer pops, the Otter Pop brand is perhaps the strongest on the United States' West Coast and features flavor-based characters such as Lil' Orphan Orange, Sir Isaac Lime, and Strawberry Short Kook. In 1999 it signed a promotional deal with General Mills' Honey Nut Cheerios to promote its freezer bars.

In 2000, Jel Sert acquired three other trademarks: Wyler's, a brand of powdered beverage mixes, and the Royal and My-T-Fine brands of puddings, pie fillings, and flan. In 2001 it bought Nabisco's gelatin, pudding and baking powder businesses, including Royal Brand gelatin, one of the main competitors of Kraft Foods' Jell-O.

Fla-Vor-Ice is the trademark name for a type of freezie. Unlike traditional popsicles, which include a wooden stick, Fla-Vor-Ice is sold in and eaten out of a plastic tube. Also unlike traditional popsicles, they are often sold in liquid form and require the consumer to freeze them at home. However, a vendor may sell them pre-frozen.

Fla-Vor-Ice is manufactured by the Jel Sert company and has, since its 1969 introduction, come to be the company's top seller. They come packaged in four varieties: Original, Light, Tropical, and Sport. The Original variety includes six flavors - Lemon Lime (green), Grape (purple), Tropical Punch (pink), Orange (orange), Berry Punch (blue), and Strawberry (red). The Tropical variety also includes six flavors, two of which are also included in the Original variety (Berry Punch and Tropical Punch) as well as four other flavors - Summer Punch (red), Citrus Punch (green), Banana (light yellow), and Pineapple (dark yellow). The Light variety includes four of the original flavors (Lemon Lime, Grape, Berry Punch, and Strawberry) but they are sugar-free and low calorie. The Sport variety also has four flavors - Tropical (pink), Grape (purple), Orange (orange), and Blue Raspberry (blue). The Sport pops are the newest to the Fla-Vor-Ice line and include Electrolytes for rehydration purposes. All boxed varieties may be purchased in pop increments of 16 or 24, with the Tropical pops available in bulk cases of 100, and the Original pops also available in cases of 80, 100, 200 or 1,000 pops.

Flavor Aid


Flavor Aid is a non-carbonated soft drink beverage made by The Jel Sert Company in West Chicago, Illinois. It was introduced in 1929. It is sold throughout the United States as an unsweetened, powdered concentrate drink mix, similar to Kool-Aid brand drink mix.

Flavor Aid currently comes in cherry, raspberry, grape, berry punch, tropical punch, orange, pineapple-orange, lemonade, pink lemonade, lemon-lime, strawberry, mango, and kiwi-watermelon flavor.

The manufacturer has also introduced several flavors of Flavor Aid designed to appeal to the Hispanic population with bilingual packaging and various exotic flavors. The Hispanic versions do not include cherry or berry punch, and instead include root beer, mango, apple, Jamaica (hibiscus), tamarindo, tangerine, and pineapple-orange.

The drink became linked to the Jonestown mass murder-and-suicide when it was learned that the cyanide poison taken by or forcibly administered to the commune's members was placed in Flavor Aid. Large barrels filled with the grape variety, laced with the cyanide and a variety of tranquilizer drugs, were found half-consumed amidst the hundreds of bodies. Kool-Aid, rather than Flavor Aid, is usually mentioned in connection with the massacre, due to its status as a genericized trademark. This factual error has even spawned the figure of speech, "drink the Kool-Aid". Film of Jonestown many months before the massacre show stocks of both Flavor Aid and its leading competitor within the commune's storehouses, so it is quite possible that both drinks were used as carriers for the poison.

My-T-Fine


My-T-Fine is a brand of pudding now marketed by Jel Sert.

Puddings are similar to custards, but thickened with cornstarch instead of eggs. Powdered mixes for puddings originated in England, where Andrew Bird created and began selling a mix for a cornstarch based custard in 1837. Puddings soon caught on in the United States as well, where My-T-Fine began selling the first boxed pudding mix (chocolate) in 1918. My-T-Fine continues today, marketing powdered pudding mixes in a variety of flavors.

Otter Pops


Otter Pops are a brand of freezies—a packaged, frozen dessert—sold in the United States. The product consists of a clear plastic tube filled with a fruit-flavored liquid. Some varieties claim to contain 100% fruit juice. Otter Pops are a frozen treat, but stores generally sell them at room temperature and the consumer puts them in the freezer.

National Pax introduced Otter Pops in 1970, in competition with Jel Sert's similar product, Fla-Vor-Ice. In 1996, Jel Sert acquired the rights to Otter Pops as well. During the 2000s, Jel Sert modified the Otter Pops recipe to add more fruit juice. The new formula has three grams of sugar and 15 calories per one-ounce serving. Current Otter Pops contain 40 calories per 2 oz. serving (one pop). The company's manufacturing facilities are in West Chicago, Illinois. Otter Pops come in 1-, 2- and 5.5-ounce serving sizes. They also come in 6 flavors, each named after a different character:

In 1995, National Pax had planned to replace the "Sir Isaac Lime" flavor with "Scarlett O'Cherry", until a group of Orange County, California fourth-graders created a petition in opposition and picketed the company's headquarters in early 1996. The crusade also included an e-mail campaign, in which a Stanford University professor reportedly accused the company of "Otter-cide". After meeting with the children, company executives relented and retained the Sir Isaac Lime flavor.

Over the generations, other uses of Otter Pops have been devised and shared in the US. They can be used as a colorful substitute for ice in a punch bowl. They can also be used to flavor mixed drinks.
