Chocodile Twinkie

Chocodile Twinkie /ˈtʃɒkoʊdaɪlz/ is a confection created by the Hostess Brands company. The confection was known only as "Chocodile" prior to 2014. The package describes the snack cake as a "chocolate coated sponge cake with creamy filling." The Chocodile is Twinkie-shaped and sold in packages of two.

The Chocodile mascot was formerly Chauncey Chocodile, but Hostess has removed him from packaging and their website in recent years. Since the late 1990s, Chocodiles have no longer been sold on the East Coast of the United States. Hostess had only a few West Coast factories making them, and to ensure the products' freshness, Chocodiles were sold only on the West Coast.

There has been debate over whether a Chocodile is a chocolate-covered Twinkie. The debate arose from the seeming "texture difference" between the Twinkie and the Chocodile. During a taste test and debate in Vacaville, California, opinions were split among those taking the test, as to whether the taste of the cake was the same. This issue was resolved during a show on the Food Network where it was confirmed by Hostess that the Chocodile was, in fact, a chocolate-covered Twinkie. This has caused consternation for some who continue to swear the cake is different. In actuality, it's the chocolate that makes the difference. Due to the chocolate coating, the cake tends to stay more moist, leading to the slightly different texture when compared to a normal Twinkie.

In 2014, Hostess Brands reintroduced the cake as "Chocodile Twinkies". The new cakes are 1.45 oz. each, and are labelled as "Fun size" as the original Chocodiles were 2 oz. each. They are also now available on the East Coast.

In 2017, Hostess reintroduced the full sized Chocodiles as "Fudge Covered Twinkies".

Ding Dong

A Ding Dong is a chocolate cake produced and distributed in the United States by Hostess Brands and currently owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co; it remains in production and distribution in Canada from Saputo Incorporated under the name King Don. Ding Dong production resumed in the United States on July 15, 2013, after an absence from American store shelves. It is round with a flat top and bottom, close to three inches in diameter and slightly taller than an inch high, similar in shape to a hockey puck. A white creamy filling is injected into the center and a thin coating of chocolate glaze covers the cake. The cake was originally wrapped in a square of thin aluminium foil, enabling it to be carried in lunches without melting the chocolate glaze.

The Ding Dong is similar to other cream-filled cakes such as Arcade Vachon's Jos. Louis introduced before 1934. Hostess began marketing its Ding Dong in 1967. The name was given to coincide with a television ad campaign featuring a ringing bell. Hostess went out of business on November 16, 2012, stopping all production. In June 2013, the new Hostess Brands reopened a Kansas product plant and announced that Ding Dong production would resume on July 15, 2013.

The company marketed the snacks on the East Coast as Big Wheels, to avoid confusion with the Ring Ding, a similar and pre-existing treat by Drake's Cakes. The names were consolidated in 1987, when a short-lived merger of Drake's with Hostess's parent company (then Continental Baking Company) briefly resolved the Ring Ding/Ding Dong conflict. When the merged company broke up, however, Hostess was once again forced to cease using the Ding Dongs name in areas where Ring Dings were available. The compromise sound-alike name King Dons lasted until Interstate Bakeries Corporation, which had recently merged with Hostess' parent company, bought Drake's in 1998. The Hostess product was then sold under the name Ding Dongs throughout the United States, although it was still sold as King Don in Canada.

Dolly Madison is a U.S. bakery brand owned by Hostess Brands, marketing prepackaged baked snack foods.

The brand used for a successful ice cream sold for decades in the United States in the mid-1900s. The logo featured a silhouette of Dolly Madison. This brand was among the products that were liquidated by Hostess due to its announced plans to go out of business on November 16, 2012. Apollo Global Management, who acquired Hostess Brands' Twinkies in January 2013, also acquired the rights to the Dolly Madison snack cake brands, as well as the official corporate name to Dolly Madison and Hostess Brands, with plans to resume production of the products.

Dolly Madison snacks are probably best known for their long association with characters from Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts comic strip. Charlie Brown and his friends appeared on Dolly Madison packages and in television commercials in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Ho Hos

Ho Hos are small, cylindrical, frosted, cream-filled chocolate snack cakes with a pinwheel design based on the Swiss roll. Made by Hostess Brands, they are similar to Yodels by Drake's and Swiss Rolls by Little Debbie.

Sold two or three per package, they contain about 120 calories per roll.

The product is also produced in Canada by Vachon Inc., which holds its Canadian rights.

A San Francisco bakery created the first Ho Hos in 1920.

"Happy Ho Ho" was created in the 1970s and was the original cartoon mascot for Ho Hos. The mascot appeared on the boxes, ads, and television commercials for many years before he was discontinued. The character wore an outfit similar to that of Robin Hood, including a feathered cap.

A nut-covered version named Nutty Ho Hos was introduced in 1999, along with a promotional search for "the country's nuttiest celebrity laugh" which was awarded to comedian Eddie Murphy based on consumer votes.

Caramel Ho Hos were introduced in February 2004. The modified snack includes a layer of caramel along with the creme filling. Caramel-chocolate Ho Hos were another new flavor that were introduced in May 2003.

Hostess Cake, simply known as Hostess, is a brand under which snack cakes are sold by Hostess Brands. The brand originated in 1919 upon the first sale of the Hostess CupCake. Hostess is better-known as the brand under which Twinkies are sold, after making its first appearance in 1930. The brand was owned by Continental Baking Company until 1995. At that point, Continental Baking was acquired by Interstate Bakeries Corporation. IBC became Hostess Brands in 2009 and began liquidating its assets in 2012 following a strike by the BCTGM union. The cake business of Hostess Brands was then sold to a "new" Hostess Brands owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and C. Dean Metropoulos and Company.

Hostess-branded products officially returned on July 15, 2013.

Their "fruit pies" became known for being in many comic book advertisements, in which a villain would be easily defeated "through the power of Hostess fruit pies". This was parodied in the Dexter's Laboratory cartoon series, with the Captain America parody Major Glory (from the Justice Friends sketch) using "Justice Fruit Pies" to thwart his enemy.

The brand's most recognized mascot is Twinkie the Kid.

Its most common form is a chocolate cupcake with chocolate icing and vanilla creme filling, with seven distinctive white squiggles across the top. However, other flavors have been available at times. It has been claimed to be the first commercially produced cupcake and has become an iconic American brand.

The Hostess CupCake was first sold on May 11, 1919, by Jeff Cup and used his name for the cup cake. According to author Andrew F. Smith, it was the first commercially produced cupcake, originally produced by the Taggart Bakery as the Chocolate Cup Cake. Hostess has also claimed that it was "the first snack cake ever introduced to the market." In 2004, rival Tastykake disputed this claim, claiming that Tastykake introduced the first snack cake.

Originally, two cupcakes were sold for five cents. Different flavors were offered during the early years, including cupcakes topped with vanilla or malted milk flavored icing. During the 1940s, an orange flavored cupcake was developed, with orange cake and icing. But until 1950, the Hostess CupCake did not have any filling or the white squiggly line across the top.

In 1947, D.R. "Doc" Rice, who started his career at Hostess in 1938 with a job that entailed dumping baked cakes on a table, was given the task of developing the Hostess CupCake further. These developments culminated in an updated cupcake in 1950. A white line consisting of squiggles was added to the top in order to distinguish the Hostess CupCake from other brands. The vanilla creme filling was also added. Rice got the idea for using a creme filling when a new machine for injecting filling into Hostess Twinkies became available. Improvements were also made to the cake mix and the chocolate icing in 1950. According to Rice, the updated cupcakes were first produced and test marketed in Detroit.

Sno Balls are cream-filled chocolate cakes covered with marshmallow frosting and coconut flakes formerly produced and distributed by Hostess and currently owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co. Sno Balls are usually pink; however, they were also available in chocolate, lemon, white, green, blue and other colors, depending on the holiday. They come in packages of two and were sold at many convenience and grocery stores in the United States. A similar cake, called a "Snowball", is often sold at supermarkets in the United Kingdom; these cakes are typically covered in desiccated coconut, but are typically brown rather than pink, because they may have chocolate on their outside. At Halloween they come in the color green and are called Glo Balls.

Sno Balls were first introduced in 1947. Hostess attributes their initial popularity to Americans being released from the flour and sugar rationing during World War II. Originally, the cakes were colored white and lacked the crème filling. The crème filling was added in 1950. A little later the pink coloring was added to the shredded coconut in one of the two cakes in each package, but eventually the company decided that it was more efficient to have both cakes the same color, and they decided to color both cakes in each package pink.

A Twinkie is an American snack cake, marketed as a "Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling." It was formerly made and distributed by Hostess Brands. The brand is currently owned by Hostess Brands, Inc. (NASDAQ: TWNK), having been formerly owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and C. Dean Metropoulos and Company as the second incarnation of Hostess Brands. Twinkies are produced in Canada by Saputo Incorporated's Vachon Inc. Twinkies were invented in Schiller Park, Illinois on April 6, 1930, by James Alexander Dewar, a baker for the Continental Baking Company. Realizing that several machines used to make cream-filled strawberry shortcake sat idle when strawberries were out of season, Dewar conceived a snack cake filled with banana cream, which he dubbed the Twinkie. Ritchy Koph said he came up with the name when he saw a billboard in St. Louis for "Twinkle Toe Shoes". During World War II, bananas were rationed and the company was forced to switch to vanilla cream. This change proved popular, and banana-cream Twinkies were not widely re-introduced. The original flavor was occasionally found in limited-time promotions, but the company used vanilla cream for most Twinkies. In 1988, Fruit and Cream Twinkies were introduced with a strawberry filling swirled into the cream. The product was soon dropped. Vanilla's dominance over banana flavoring would be challenged in 2005, following a month-long promotion of the movie King Kong. Hostess saw its Twinkie sales rise 20 percent during the promotion, and in 2007 restored the banana-cream Twinkie to its snack lineup.

Zingers

Zingers is an American snack cake produced and sold by Dolly Madison and Hostess, snack food brands owned by Hostess Brands and currently owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co.

Zingers are similar to Twinkies and come in devil's food, vanilla, and raspberry flavors.

Chocolate and vanilla Zingers have a thick layer of icing on top with cream (synthetic, not dairy) filling in the middle. Raspberry Zingers do not have icing on top but are instead covered in a mixture of shaved coconut and raspberry flavored syrup.

A series of commercials for Zingers used the Peanuts characters, with Snoopy playing the part of the mysterious "Zinger Zapper", the thrust of the ads featuring the other characters attempting to discover his true identity by tempting him with Zingers. Famously, at least one of these commercials included the only time the Dolly Madison logo came to life (when she admonished the "Zinger Zapper" for trying to steal a Zinger in the last scene).

Zingers later introduced the Ecto-Cooler flavor in conjunction with the release of the The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series. It featured a vanilla filling topped with a thick orange flavor icing. The entire cake was colored green to match the character Slimer from the series

Hostess released a limited edition One Piece Zingers flavor in Japan around 2000, when the anime series was starting to become popular. The snack cake had a purple filling to represent the Devil Fruit from the series. The wrappers included images of the characters Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, and Sanji. They were in production until 2002.
