Bendicks

Bendicks is a chocolate brand currently owned by August Storck KG, famed for its "quintessentially British" Bittermint dark mint chocolates, still made to the original recipe of 1931.

In 1930 Oscar Benson and Colonel 'Bertie' Dickson purchased a small confectionery business at 164 Church street in Kensington, London, with the chocolates made in a tiny basement below the shop. They used the first syllable of each of their surnames to come up with the name Bendicks.

In 1931 Benson's sister-in-law, Lucia Benson, came up with a dark chocolate so bitter that it was virtually inedible on its own, and combined it with a mint fondant that was so strongly flavoured with mint oil that it was also difficult to eat on its own. When the two parts were combined they produced a very palatable chocolate that they named Bendicks Bittermints. The chocolate coating contains 95% cocoa solids.

By 1933, Bendicks was developing a reputation for quality and a new store was opened in the heart of London's exclusive Mayfair. Prominent among the visitors was the Duke of Kent, son of King George V, who visited for the renowned Bittermints. The company soon became known as Bendicks of Mayfair.

In 1946 the business was sold to Mr. Edgar Lawley. By 1952 Bendicks had moved to a building which bridged St. Thomas Street and Little Minster Street in Winchester, Hampshire. This building, which has now been demolished and replaced by residential properties and garages, had been constructed in around 1890 and been used as The Winchester Temperance Billiards Hall. It had already acquired the business of William Cox & Son, manufacturers of Royal Winchester Chocolates (a name which has been discontinued), which had been located in St. George's Street, Winchester (now occupied by McDonald's).

The reputation of the company and its products was further enhanced in 1962 when it was awarded the coveted Royal Warrant: "By Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen".

The confectionery products were expensive but were all made with the finest quality ingredients. The main part of the business was chocolate coated confectionery and these were all hand dipped, giving a much thicker layer of chocolate, and the availability of female 'dippers' was a constraint on the growth of the business. They also produced confectionery products such as nougat and chocolate bars. A feature of Bittermints was that they could be purchased in 9 inch, 18 inch and 36 inch boxes (by the yard).

In 1967 the business was moved to a purpose built factory in Moorside Road, Winchester. During the 1960s it had been acquired by Wood Hall Trust Ltd. (itself subsequently being acquired by Elders IXL, the Australian conglomerate, in 1982). In later years enrobing equipment was introduced allowing an increase in production.

Moser-Roth

Moser-Roth is a brand of German chocolate produced by Storck for Aldi.

The company was founded in 1841 by pastry chef Wilhelm Roth Jr. in Stuttgart. In 1876 Roth retired from the company and the small factory was taken over by Wilhelm Wagner and Kommerzienrat Sproesser. In 1881 the company moved to larger premises.

In 1896 The company merged with its Stuttgart competitor E. O. Moser & Cie, which had been founded in 1846 by master confectioner Eduard Otto Moser (1818–78).

The brand name Moser-Roth was registered in 1902. Moser-Roth was the largest chocolate factory in Stuttgart in the 20th century, around 1910 employing as many as 550 people. Other chocolate companies in Stuttgart at the time included Eszet, Haller, Waldbaur, Schoko-Buck, Friedel, and Ritter, of which only the last is still in existence. Eszet is now made by Sarotti.

Early in 1942, the company was shut down for political reasons by the German government. In September 1944, the entire factory burned down in an air raid.

Karl Haller of Stuttgart acquired the Moser-Roth brand name in 1947 and in 1948 resumed production in the Obertürkheim section of the city. After his death the Haller company was acquired by Melitta; chocolate production continued until 1967, after which the Moser-Roth brand name passed through various owners, being finally sold to Storck. Since June 2007 Storck has produced chocolate for Aldi at Moser-Roth GmbH, located in the Berlin borough of Reinickendorf. Moser-Roth is Aldi's premium brand of chocolate; it received an award from the German Agricultural Society in 2007.

Riesen

imageRiesen

Riesen (German for the English word giants) is a confectionery of chocolate and chocolate-flavored caramel produced and distributed by August Storck KG, a German confectioner that also produces Werther's Original. In the US, the candy is individually wrapped and sold in medium, large, and club-sized bags. In the UK, the candies come loose in packs of 5. It consists of bite-sized pieces of chewy chocolate caramel covered in dark chocolate.

Among its ingredients, Palm Oil is present.

While small corner shops in Germany still sell loose candy out of big jars, Storck introduced the first wrapped and branded caramel - the Storck 1 Pfennig Riesen (IPA [rizṇ]). It quickly became a popular candy due to its appealing caramel taste and chewiness.

The 1 Pfennig Riesen evolves into the 2 Pfennig RIESEN and later into Storck RIESEN. It is available in several different flavors, including chocolate-caramel.

The chocolate-caramel candy is covered in dark chocolate and becomes the "Chocolate Riesen." The Storck Chocolate Riesen becomes available in bags of individually wrapped pieces.

The Riesen brand is successfully expanded internationally, introduced to the United States in 1991. Today, Riesen is well established in many important European and North American markets, such as Germany, Scandinavia, the UK, the USA and Canada.

"Peanut Riesen" was introduced in 2001 and contained chopped peanuts in caramel covered in chocolate. It was discontinued in 2002 due to lack of popularity.

"Riesen for the Post-Season Hot Chocolate" was first brewed in Boston, Massachusetts during the winter of 2007 as a way to stay warm and celebrate the AFC champion New England Patriots. The drink is prepared by melting the candies over medium heat in a small saucepan, adding one cup of milk per candy. Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg to taste.
