Ritter Sport

imageAlfred Ritter GmbH & Co. KG

Ritter Sport is a brand of chocolate from Alfred Ritter GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in Waldenbuch, Germany.

Each 100 gram square-shaped bar is divided into 16 smaller squares, creating a four-by-four pattern. In 2013 the company introduced a new version that is divided into 9 smaller squares using a three-by-three pattern. Large bars weighing 250 grams and 16.5 gram mini bars are also available, although in fewer varieties.

In 1912, Alfred Ritter and newly wedded wife, Clara, founded a chocolate factory in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt. Later it introduced its own brand of chocolate named "Alrika (Alfred Ritter Cannstatt)." When production needs required a factory expansion, the company moved to Waldenbuch in 1930, a couple of miles outside Stuttgart. The chocolate brand Ritter's Sport Schokolade produced as the square tablet known today was launched in 1932 after Clara suggested creating a chocolate bar that would fit into every sport jacket pocket without breaking.

The company's current 3rd generation owners are Alfred T. Ritter and his sister Marli Hoppe-Ritter. In 1990 they launched project(s) "Cacaonica", which supports organic cocoa agriculture and reforestation in Nicaragua and "Ritter Solar" now the European market leader of solar thermal products and Large solar thermal systems. The Ritter company owns a CHP power plant and buys additional electricity from renewable resources. The monomaterial chocolate packaging is designed to minimize its ecological footprint.

On the whole, their products are neither certified organic nor certified fair trade. However, in April 2008 they launched an organic product line called "Ritter Sport Bio".

The Ritter museum is a "homage to the square"—to describe the Sammlung Marli Hoppe-Ritter. The collection consists of nearly 600 paintings, objects, sculptures and graphic works, a breadth of painterly and sculptural confrontation with the square form used as the design for the Ritter chocolate. Ritter's factory is located in Waldenbuch, outside Stuttgart. They have shops and museums in Waldenbuch and Berlin that are open to visitors. The museum provides children with an interactive environment where they are presented with the opportunity to learn about how chocolate is made at the factory.

Prestat

imagePrestat Ltd

Prestat Ltd is one of London's oldest chocolate shops. It has been awarded two Royal Warrants: from Her Majesty The Queen and Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

Prestat Ltd was established in 1902 by French émigré Antoine Dufour. The Dufour family created the chocolate truffle in Chambéry in France in December 1895 but it only became widely available when the new creation was brought to England by Antoine Dufour with the opening of the first Prestat shop in South Molton Street in central London.

Antoine Dufour, for reasons uncertain, named his business Prestat after Pierre Prestat who was his wife's first cousin and some of the earlier packaging has the company's name as P. Prestat. Antoine Dufour opened a further two shops, one at 405 Oxford Street and a second at 28 St Swithin's Lane in the City of London financial district.

Antoine Dufour passed the business on to his son Tony Dufour who ran Prestat through to the late 1950s. The difficulties of trading during the Second World War led to the closure of the Oxford Street and St Swithin's Lane stores and Tony Dufour eventually sold the business to brothers Neville and Maxwell Croft.

The company received royal warrants as purveyors of chocolates to Queen Elizabeth II in 1975 and to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1999.

Nominated as one of the world's top three chocolate shops by The Economist in 2003 Prestat's current flagship store is at 14 Princes Arcade, Piccadilly, and in March 2009 Prestat opened within the Chocolate Hall of Harrods. Its current range of packaging is the work of designer and artist Kitty Arden, who in 2000 collaborated with Lulu Guinness, the handbag designer, to create a limited edition handbag in the design of the Prestat shop.

Prestat is currently owned by half-brothers Nick Crean and William Keeling who bought Prestat from the company's third owner Stanley Cohen in October 1998. The company products are now sold in leading stores (including Harrods, Selfridges, Liberty & Co. and John Lewis Partnership) and fine food shops throughout the UK. Prestat exports its chocolates to countries including Japan, Australia, Singapore, Dubai, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory

imageRocky Mountain Chocolate Factory

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is an international franchisor, confectionery manufacturer and retail operator in the United States, Canada, Japan, the Philippines, and the United Arab Emirates. The company is based in the town of Durango located on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Colorado.

From its 53,000-square-foot (4,900 m2) factory, the company manufactures an extensive line of premium chocolate candies and other confectionery products to supply its many franchise locations, delivered fresh by its fleet of refrigerated trucks. The factory typically produces approximately 300 chocolate candies and other confectionery products, using proprietary recipes developed primarily by its master candy maker. These products include many varieties of clusters, caramels, creams, meltaways, truffles and molded chocolates. Individual stores prepare a variety of caramel and candy apples, fudge, chocolate items and confections in full view of the customer using traditional cooking utensils such as copper kettles on gas-fired stoves and marble slab cooling tables.

In 1985, the company went public and is now traded on the NASDAQ exchange under the symbol "RMCF".

The company was founded by Frank Crail, who had recently moved to Durango from Newport Beach, California to raise his family in a small town. He later confessed to Candy industry magazine that he would have opened a See's Candies, but the company doesn't sell franchises. In 1981, the first store was opened on Main street by Frank and two partners. In 1982, the company's first franchises, one in Colorado Springs and one in Park City, Utah were opened. An offsite factory was also built that year. In 1983, the two other partners left the business. In 1985, the company went public on the NASDAQ. In 1996, Whitman's Candies made an offer to buy the company for US$16 million. The offer was rejected by management after the company's results improved in late 1999.

In 2013, Kellogg's in the United States partnered with the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory to release a cereal under the latter's brand which consists of sweetened corn flakes, almond slices, and chocolate pieces. After a brief test run, Kellogg's expanded the cereal nationwide in 2014, in part to positive reviews and growing consumer interest in the product.

It exported to Russia, with 40 percent of the company's grosses came from there until Russia stopped importing from the company in July 2013.

In July 2013, Russia banned all Roshen imports due to dissatisfaction with the packaging labelling. Soon after Roshen products were also checked in Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova but this did not lead to complaints. On 21 October 2013, Russia's ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov said, "There are no problems with the quality of products, they are safe. But there are problems associated with the production technology, using some ingredients that are not certified in accordance with the law." According to the 17 December 2013 Ukrainian-Russian action plan by 1 March 2014 Roshen products should have been back in Russian stores. But on 12 March 2014, acting head of the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare Anna Popova stated that Ukraine had not yet fulfilled their requirements to return Roshen products to the Russian market.
