Drank (soda)

Drank is a grape-flavored soft drink sold in the United States and Canada. It is marketed as a "Non-Energy" drink which causes relaxation as opposed to a sugar or caffeine jolt.

Drank contains three active ingredients: melatonin, rose hip and Valerian root.

Drank's slogan is "Slow Your Roll".

Drank was introduced and manufactured by Innovative Beverage Group of Houston, Texas in January 2008. It was widely available in many convenience stores and saw brisk sales. In 2012, a new flavor, "Island Time", was introduced, but to a lukewarm response. Poor sales of both flavors saw the product disappear off store shelves in 2013. In 2014, Drank was sold to Source Financial Group, L.L.C. who has reintroduced the brand. Its availability is much reduced and found in very select convenience stores in the Houston, TX and Saginaw, MI area. Little or no sources outside of Houston have been found, and it does not appear to have a website of its own.

Drank and similar commercial products have been criticized for their potential to serve as gateways to the dangerous illegal concoctions of cough syrup colloquially known as purple drank. At a mental health conference in February 2010, Dr. Ronald Peters, Jr., of the University of Texas Health Science Center said of Drank: "They're taking the name, and they're trying to market it to young people." He described the beverage as "the worst thing I've ever seen on the street since the making of candy cigarettes".

Health experts have warned that the herbal ingredients in Drank and similar beverages induce drowsiness and sedation, which can be dangerous when combined with medications or products that do similar things, such as alcohol or anti-depressants. Gregory Carter, a neurologist on the clinical staff of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, told the Dallas Morning News that there is enough melatonin in Drank to induce sleepiness, and that this effect could occur quickly because the melatonin is in dissolved form. Regarding Valerian, Carter found that the content was probably "not enough to have a strong effect".

Lava Cola

Lava Cola (officially Lava Cola – Vanuatu Kava Cola) is a cola drink produced in Vanuatu by Vanuatu Beverage Ltd. It contains a kavalactone additive, kava consumption being traditionally important in western Pacific nations. Lava Cola has been described as an "anti-energy drink". Australian media have noted that it "produces the calming effect of kava without the muddy taste," adding that, while kava itself is an acquired taste, Lava Cola may well be suitable for export.

The cola began as a syrupy "water-based kava extract" developed by Australian-born James Armitage in 2009. He then successfully approached Vanuatu Beverage to suggest blending it with cola. The watery kava syrup is "added to cola in a proportion of 15 millilitres to a bottle of 330 ml". The drink is now produced in a factory on the outskirts of Port Vila, the country's capital. It went into production for the domestic market in October 2009. Lava Cola uses kava produced on the island of Maewo, which has generated an increase in revenues for local producers. Vanuatu Beverage hopes to export the drink first to Fiji and New Caledonia, then to a wider market.

Pronounced - Passi-ona A similar passionfruit flavoured soft drink produced by Kirks is Pasito.

Originally developed as a cordial by Lismore dairy farmer Spencer Cottee during the 1920s to avoid wasting excess passionfruit on his farm, when carbonated Passiona became a foundation product of the Cottee's range. Cottee granted licences to produce the drink to a number of now defunct Australian bottlers, including Geo. Hall & Sons in South Australia and Bowral Bottlers in the NSW Southern Highlands. The trademark as also been used by Cottee's jelly crystal range.

A long time favorite to this day, Passiona is a Cultural Icon and is mentioned in Kath and Kim, where Kim seduces Bretty away from Sharon via icy cold Passiona. Unfair.

Slow Cow

imageSlow Cow

Slow Cow is a relaxation beverage produced in Quebec, Canada by the company Slow Cow Drink Inc. Dubbed an "anti-energy" drink, it was created to "help people slow down" and parodied Red Bull by using packaging similar to that of the popular energy drink. Slow Cow was launched in Quebec in December 2008, with plans to sell the product in the rest of Canada, and in France, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, the United States, Russia, Hong Kong, Italy, China and the Czech Republic.

Slow Cow's main ingredient is L-Theanine which, according to the manufacturer, "produces a feeling of relaxation and creates a feeling of well-being."

Slow Cow was developed by Lino Fleury in Quebec. He noted that while there were plenty of energy drinks available, there were no beverages to "help people slow down when they are stressed." Because of the caffeine present in energy drinks, he said that they were inclined to "increase anxiety, not reduce it." Fleury and his team began developing the relaxation drink in 2006 using mostly natural ingredients that would calm the drinker without inducing drowsiness.

When the finished product was launched in December 2008, it was packaged to parody Red Bull. The can was of a similar shape and size of the popular energy drink, and the logo featured two cows relaxing to contrast the two bulls fighting in the Red Bull logo. After the launch, Red Bull GmbH sent Slow Cow Drink Inc. a formal notice to close, claiming that Slow Cow's packaging copied Red Bull's. While Fleury admitted to the similar packaging, he said that his lawyers "are confident they will win this case."

Slow Cow's principal ingredient is L-Theanine, an amino acid found in tea plants that increases levels of GABA in the brain, which is said to produce a "feeling of relaxation and [...] well-being" "without causing sleepiness". L-Theanine is also said to increase mental awareness, cognition, and concentration. Michael Lyon, head of the Canadian Centre for Functional Medicine in Vancouver, believes that L-Theanine "is the best-kept secret in natural medicine".
