Gilbert is a village in Franklin Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 521 at the 2010 census.
The village is named for one of the early families of Franklin Parish. One of their descendants is former state legislator J.C. "Sonny" Gilbert of Sicily Island in neighboring Catahoula Parish.
The Gilbert welcome sign recognizes that General Claire Chennault lived there for a time as a youth.
Gilbert is located in southern Franklin Parish at 32°2′59″N 91°39′36″W / 32.04972°N 91.66000°W / 32.04972; -91.66000 (32.049677, -91.660109), along U.S. Route 425, which leads north 9.5 miles (15.3 km) to Winnsboro, the parish seat, and south 14 miles (23 km) to Sicily Island.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village of Gilbert has a total area of 0.96 square miles (2.49Â km2), of which 0.94 square miles (2.44Â km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.04Â km2), or 1.77%, is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 561 people, 207 households, and 150 families residing in the village. The population density was 573.5 inhabitants per square mile (221.0/km²). There were 231 housing units at an average density of 236.2 per square mile (91.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 62.21% White, 35.83% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.25% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. Wikipedia
