Duders Beach

Duders Beach (Umupuia Beach) is located in Manukau City, New Zealand, to the east of Maraetai on the North Road from Clevedon. Duder Regional Park is on the headland immediately to the east.

The land was purchased in 1866 from the original Maori owners Ngāi Tai by Thomas Duder. Today the beach is divided between the "public beach" and a private beach owned above the high tide mark by his descendants.

Duders Beach has traditionally been a good source of seafood, notably shellfish, but stocks have been depleted in recent times.

Orewa

imageOrewa

Orewa, a town in New Zealand's North Island, lies on the Hibiscus Coast, just north of the base of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and 40 kilometres north of central Auckland. Orewa's population was 8,523 in the 2013 Census, an increase of 1,197 from 2006. It is a popular holiday destination. Orewa is also considered one of the fastest growing places in New Zealand and is one of the most expensive areas in which to buy a house.

The northern motorway, part of State Highway 1, passes just inland of Orewa and extends through the twin Johnston Hill tunnels to near Puhoi. Orewa was administered as part of the Rodney District for two decades, until this was subsumed by the broader Auckland Council in October 2010.

Places of note within the town include:

Orewa beach is one of the longest (3km) and safest beaches in Auckland. One of the more notable events on the beach is the Orewa Big Dig. This is an annual event organized by the local Lions Club, where children dig in the sand to find prizes. All monies raised go to local community groups. Orewa Community Centre is located in Orewa Square. The Hibiscus Community Centre is located at 214E Hibiscus Coast Highway.

Orewa District High School was founded in 1956. In 1974, the school was split into Orewa Primary School and Orewa College. Orewa North Primary School was founded in 1978, and another primary school opened at Red Beach to the south in 1988.

Orewa College is a secondary (years 7-13) school with a decile rating of 9 and a roll of 1696.

Orewa Primary School, Orewa North Primary School and Red Beach Primary School are contributing primary (years 1-6) schools, all with decile ratings of 8 and rolls of 214 and 320 respectively.

All three schools are coeducational.

In 2005 locally famous Puriri Park, at the foot of Eaves Bush, was sold for over $2,000,000. It was being subdivided in a $450 million development to form the community of Kensington Park to provide for the rapidly rising demand for housing in Orewa and the surrounding area. This upset some elderly locals as they regarded the old park as a popular place for people to enjoy their holidays and saw the development as a sign of further development to Orewa. However the developer went into receivership in September 2008 after completing less than 10% of the 750 homes planned.

Red Beach

Red Beach is a suburb surrounding the beach of the same name on the Hibiscus Coast, Auckland, New Zealand, at the base of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. The suburb of Silverdale is to the south-west, and Orewa to the north. The beach is on the Hauraki Gulf and the suburb is bounded by two estuaries, that of the Weiti River to the south and the Orewa River to the north. The population was 6,315 in the 2006 Census, an increase of 654 from 2001.

The Hibiscus Coast Highway runs through the suburb. This was previously State Highway 1 and then State Highway 17. The majority of highway traffic now travels along the Northern Motorway inland instead, as the motorway was redesignated as State Highway 1 when an extension was completed in 2009. All road access to the rest of Whangaparaoa Peninsula currently runs through the suburb.

Popular attractions include:

Red Beach School is a contributing primary (years 1-6) school with a decile rating of 9 and a roll of 643. The school opened in 1989 covering years 1-8, but reduced its age range when Hibiscus Coast Intermediate opened in 1997 (the intermediate later became part of Whangaparaoa College).

Waiwera

Waiwera is a locality situated in the north of the Auckland Region in New Zealand. The name is of Māori origin and means "Hot Water" (Wai = Water and Wera = Hot). Its main claim to fame are the hot water springs which were well known in pre-European times and reputedly visited by Māori from as far away as Thames. The first European settler to promote the springs was Robert Graham who established a health resort in 1848. During the late 19th century there was a regular steam ferry service from Auckland.

Waiwera is 6 km north of Orewa, 6 km south-east of Puhoi, 23 km south-east of Warkworth and approximately 35 km from the Auckland City centre. The settlement lies at the outlet of a river also called Waiwera. Less than 1 kilometre north of the Waiwera turn-off lies the turn-off to Wenderholm Regional Park which is situated on the far side of the headland to the north of the Waiwera River outlet.
