Pipeworks Brewing

imagePipeworks Brewing Company

Pipeworks Brewing Company is a brewery in Chicago, Illinois. The brewery opened in January 2012 by founders Beejay Oslon and Gerrit Lewis. Pipeworks began their brewing different from other microbreweries in that they initially brewed their beers entirely as a series of 'one off' beers that were aimed specifically to the niche market of beer connoisseurs. The brewery's stated goal is to release a new beer every week. This approach gave the brewery and its beers somewhat of a cult status among beer enthusiasts, with its offerings selling out relatively quickly. After seeing significant growth, both in output brand and identity, Pipeworks has since augmented their one-off beers with several of its 'core' beers in 16 ounce can 4-Packs now regularly available widley throughout the Chicago area.

Pipeworks began as the brainchild of Oslon and Lewis, who were homebrewers that met while working at West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago. The two were educated in larger scale brewing at the De Struise Brewery in Oostvleteren, Belgium. In 2011, the pair began an online fundraising campaign to raise the capital needed to build the brewery, which would be located in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood. Oslon and Lewis planned specifically to build a smaller brewery that veered from the conventional course followed by most commercial breweries: they would not make the same exact beer twice. This concept, which is known in the industry as gypsy brewing, became conceptualized as somewhat of a hybrid at the fledgling brewery, given that that style of brewing is usually done on borrowed equipment. The duo also took an unorthodox approach in the building of the brewery, raising over $30,000 (USD) through internet donations via Kickstarter. In late January, 2013, Pipeworks was awarded RateBeer's 'Best New Brewery' distinction for 2012.

In June, 2015, Pipeworks purchased a larger facility in the West Side, 3912 W. MacLean Ave., near Pulaski Road and Armitage Avenue. They planned to move production to both bottling and canning. They're original facility has since been vacated and is set to be demolished to make way for condominiums.

Pyramid Breweries

imagePyramid Breweries, Inc.

Pyramid Breweries, Inc., is a brewing company headquartered in Seattle, Washington. It produces beer under the Pyramid brand at two breweries and several brewpubs in Washington, Oregon, and California. It was founded in 1984 as Hart Brewing, and is currently owned by the Costa Rican company Florida Ice & Farm Co.

Originally named Hart Brewing, the company was founded by Tom Baune and Beth Hartwell in 1984 in Kalama, Washington. A pioneer of craft brewing in the Pacific Northwest, Hart's signature beer was Pyramid Pale Ale, which it followed with Pyramid Wheaten Ale in 1985. In 1994 Hart debuted the Apricot Ale, a fruit beer that quickly became its most prominent brand. The company opened new facilities and greatly expanded its production, and changed its name to Pyramid Breweries in 1996. It also started experimenting with other styles, which won a number of brewing competitions in the U.S. and abroad. Eventually it grew to become one of the five largest craft brewers in the country.

Pyramid eventually stopped brewing in Kalama in favor of other locations, but maintained its headquarters in Seattle. In 2004, Pyramid acquired Portland Brewing Company, makers of the MacTarnahan's brand. In 2008, the company was itself purchased by Independent Brewers United, the parent company of Magic Hat Brewing Company of Burlington, Vermont. Magic Hat maintained the Seattle office and the Pyramid and MacTarnahan's facilities and products. Two years later, the joint company was acquired by North American Breweries of Rochester, New York. In December 2012, the parent company was purchased by Cerveceria Costa Rica, a unit of the Costa Rican company Florida Ice & Farm Co.

Red Dog (beer)

Red Dog is a beer produced by the Miller Brewing Company and is part of their Plank Road Brewery Family. The beer contains 4.8% Alcohol by volume. Red Dog was introduced in 1994 and is brewed with two barley malts and five varieties of American hops. "Plank Road Brewery" was the name of Frederick Miller's first brewhouse in the 19th century. The Plank Road name was resurrected in the 1990s to sell Icehouse and Red Dog as a more premium beer under a different name, so as not to directly associate them with Miller Brewing. Although popular during the mid-to-late 1990s, Red Dog faded into near-obscurity after the turn of the 21st century. However, since 2005 it has been returning to stores in a current price segment between Miller High Life and Milwaukee's Best.

Rheingold Beer

Rheingold Beer, introduced in 1883, is a New York beer that held 35 percent of the state's beer market from 1950 to 1960. The company was sold by the founding German American Liebmann family in 1963. According to the New York Times, "Rheingold Beer was once a top New York brew guzzled regularly by a loyal cadre of workingmen who would just as soon have eaten nails as drink another beer maker's suds." Its VP-Technical Joseph Owades claims credit for Rheingold's developing the first light beer.

Rheingold shut down operations in 1976, when they were unable to compete with the large national breweries, as corporate consolidation and the rise of national breweries led to the demise of dozens of regional breweries.

The label was revived in 1998 by Terry Liebmann and partner Mike Mitaro. The beer's evocative name is an allusion to Germany's great river Rhein as well as Richard Wagner's opera Das Rheingold.

At the center of its media campaign was the "Miss Rheingold" pageant. Beer drinkers voted each year on the young lady who would be featured as Miss Rheingold in advertisements. In the 1940s and 1950s in New York, "the selection of Miss Rheingold was as highly anticipated as the race for the White House." The first Miss Rheingold was Spanish-born Jinx Falkenburg. When Nat King Cole became the first major black entertainer to host a television show, advertisers stayed away—but not Rheingold; Rheingold was the New York regional sponsor for Cole's show. As early as 1965, Rheingold aired television ads featuring African American, Puerto Rican and Asian actors, to appeal to its racially diverse customer base. The company's headquarters was in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Rheingold was the official beer of the New York Mets, and its advertisements featured John Wayne, Jackie Robinson, Sarah Vaughan and the Marx Brothers. They also sponsored The Jackie Robinson Show which aired on 660 WRCA radio in New York City on Sunday evenings between 6:30 and 7 PM during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Rocket Republic Brewing Company

Rocket Republic Brewing Company, Inc. is a craft brewery located in Madison, Alabama incorporated in Alabama in March 2013. The brewery received their state ABC license in July 2013 and successfully launched their beers on September 6, 2013. The launch day was held at The Nook, a beer bar in Huntsville, Alabama and launch beers were Vapor Trail Cream Ale and Astronut Brown Ale. Rocket Republic is owned by Eric Crigger (brewer), Tatum Crigger, John Troy and Lynn Troy.

Crigger started brewing on a Mr. Beer kit, quickly progressed to all-grain brewing and then took a part time position at the, now defunct, Olde Towne Brewing Company in Huntsville, Alabama. In 2008, Crigger attended a class at Chicago's Siebel Institute of Technology on how to start your own brewery.

Rocket Republic ceased contract brewing, started brewing out of their own facility in March of 2015 and opened their tap room on March 17, 2015, St. Patrick's Day. All beer is produced out of their 10,000 square foot warehouse space converted into a functioning brewery. Rogue Ales

imageRogue Ales

Rogue Ales is a brewery founded in 1988 in Ashland, Oregon, United States. The following year the company opened their second brewpub in Newport, Oregon where they are now headquartered. They operate brewpubs in Oregon, Washington, and California. Rogue exports throughout the US and internationally. Rogue Ales have been described as "invariably fun and full flavored".

The company has also expanded into distilling as well, with micro distilleries in Newport and Portland.

Rogue Ales was founded in Ashland, Oregon in 1988 by three Nike, Inc. executives: Jack Joyce, Rob Strasser, and Bob Woodell. The company relocated to Newport in 1989 and opened its flagship brew pub on the town's waterfront.

Rogue came to be headquartered in Newport, an Oregon coastal fishing town after Jack Joyce, one of the company's founders, visited the area at the suggestion of a partner. He met Mo Niemi, owner of Mo's restaurant chain. Mo was well known for being generous as well as for her clam chowder. Niemi was interested in operating a brewpub on the Newport waterfont in a property her family owned. Although Joyce was initially skeptical about running a full-fledged brewery, Niemi convinced him to take on the venture. Niemi insisted that the company would give back to the local community, saying "...if you're lucky enough not to go broke, feed the fishermen." Now deceased, Niemi's legacy lives on at Rogue: her image is featured on the Half-e-weizen bottle (originally Mo's Ale and now MoM Ale).

Joyce has described the company's goals as, "...keep making great product, keep trying to make our packaging great, keep trying to integrate ourselves in our communities, and keep creating unique thunder (in promotions)...". Rogue maintains a company manifesto that expands on their values.

The company gives back to its community in a variety of ways, for example helping the City of Newport celebrate its 125th anniversary with the issue of a limited edition Newport Anniversary Ale, whose historical label pays tribute to the Yaquina Brewery, Newport's first. Rogue also donates ongoing proceeds of a specialty brew series to the Oregon Coast Aquarium (past beers have included Spiny Lumpsucker Ale, Wolf Eel Ale, Shark Tooth Ale and Sea Otter Amber). One (Whale Ale) was even crafted in honor of Keiko, the orca, the aquarium's most celebrated resident and star of the movie Free Willy before his release into open waters. In addition there are ongoing sponsored activities like the annual surfing event "The Gathering Longboard Classic" on Newport's South Beach.

Rogue Beard Beer

Rogue Ales Beard Beer is an American wild ale brewed by Rogue Ales of Newport, Oregon using wild yeast originally cultured from nine beard hairs belonging to Rogue Ales' brewmaster, John Maier.

Following media coverage in 2012, the beer went on sale on April 1, 2013. When reporting on the introduction of the beer in 2013, The Oregonian newspaper originally stated that the Huffington Post had been taken in by an April Fools' Day joke, but the Oregonian writer was contacted by a Rogue employee, and reported a few days later that it was not a joke. During development, the beer's working name was New Crustacean.

Rogue set out to find a local wild yeast to complement the locally sourced hops and grains used in their other ales, to "increase the terroir" of the finished product. Unsuitable samples were taken from various places, including the company's hopyard in Independence, Oregon, before the brewmaster's beard was tried.

Isolating and cultivating a new wild yeast or strain of bacteria can be difficult, resulting in "rediscovery" of already utilized organisms. Analysis of the yeast cultivated from Maier's beard showed that it was a new strain, perhaps a hybrid incorporating genes from Rogue's house yeast called "Pacman".

Beverages produced with local American native yeast are collectively known as the American wild ale style, of which Beard Beer is an example. Other American breweries have been successful in developing lines of brewer's yeast from a number of local wild sources, including Dogfish Head Brewery (cultivated from skins of Delaware peaches), Lost Rhino Brewing (captured at Janelia Farm) Mystic Brewing (Massachusetts plums), and Linden Street Brewery (cultivated from San Francisco sourdough).
