Christian Moerlein Brewing Co.

Coordinates: 39°6′50.07″N 84°30′53.07″W / 39.1139083°N 84.5147417°W / 39.1139083; -84.5147417

Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. is a private beer company that began production in 1853 in Cincinnati, Ohio by German immigrant Christian Moerlein. Before closing its doors in 1919 as result of prohibition, Christian Moerlein was among the ten largest American breweries by volume. In 1981, the brand was revived by the Hudepohl Brewing Company as a "better beer" a precursor to the current craft beer category and is considered a pioneer craft beer of today's craft beer movement. In 1999, Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Co. sold to a group of out-of-town owners, which included the famed Christian Moerlein craft beer brand. In 2004, Greg Hardman a Cincinnati resident purchased Christian Moerlein, as well as 65 other historic Cincinnati brands, returning local ownership back to Cincinnati that included a four phase plan to return Cincinnati's grand brewing traditions. The four phase plan was, 1) return the local ownership of Cincinnati's great beer brands back to Cincinnati; 2) build their base of sales to; 3) open local brewing operations in the heart of Cincinnati's historic Brewery District and; 4) open a World-class Moerlein Lager House on the banks of the Ohio River to act as a beacon that beer is back in Cincinnati.

In 2010, Hardman obtained the former Husman Potato Chip factory at 1621 Moore Street and the site of the pre-prohibition John Kauffman brewery's malt house and underground lager cellars. The location is just blocks from the original site of Christian Moerlein in Over-the-Rhine. The first beer brewed in the new location was the Christian Moerlein Arnold's 1861 Porter, which was made available on New Year's Eve 2010, in recognition of the 150th anniversary of Cincinnati's longest continuously running bar, Arnold's Bar and Grill. In March 2013, full production began at the brewery with all Christian Moerlein beers brewed in the historic brewery.

Christian Schmidt Brewing Company

imageChristian Schmidt Brewing Company

The Christian Schmidt Brewing Company was an American brewing company located in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The company was founded in 1860 when 27 year old brewmaster Christian Schmidt acquired Courtenay's Brewery in Philadelphia. Schmidt's continued to grow and expand throughout its 127 years in operation.

Like all American breweries, C. Schmidt & Sons was forced to cease production of alcohol with the passing of the 18th amendment in 1920. During the prohibition era from 1920-1933, many breweries turned to other production methods to stay in business. Schmidt's used its facilities to produce non-alcoholic cereal beverages during the thirteen year hiatus from brewing beer. Following the repeal of the 18th ammendent in 1933, Schmidt's began producing beer again, and embarked upon plans to both expand and modernize its brewery.

The company ceased production and sold its brands to G. Heileman Brewing Company of La Crosse, Wisconsin, in April 1987. The Philadelphia factory, located between Second and Hancock Streets and south of Girard Avenue, was razed in 2002 after being sold at sheriff’s auction on January 19, 2000 for $1.8 million to developer Bart Blatstein. Today, it is the site of the 28-acre Piazza at Schmidt's, a retail, restaurant, and apartment complex.

Christian Schmidt was born in Machstadt, Wurtemberg, Germany in 1832 and immigrated to the United States, arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1851. He became associated with the brewery of Robert Courtenay and became a partner in 1860. The brewery was renamed Christian Schmidt, Kensington Brewery when Schmidt became sole proprietor in 1863.

By 1892 Christian Schmidt's three sons, Henry C., Edward A. and Frederick W., joined the business and the brewery was incorporated as C. Schmidt & Sons. Upon Christian's death in 1895, Edward A. Schmidt became head of the company until his own death in 1944. Frederick W. Schmidt, served as president until 1945 when he became chairman of the board, a position he held until his death in 1949.

Colt 45 (malt liquor)

imageColt 45

Colt 45 is a brand of lager or malt liquor in the United States, introduced by National Brewing Company in the spring of 1963. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, the National Brewing Company and its brands (including Colt 45) are today owned by the Pabst Brewing Company.

Colt 45 is available today in a multitude of packages and sizes. Cans are available in 12-, 16- and 24-ounce packages and bottles are available in 7-, 12-, 16-, 18-, 22-, 32-, and 40-ounce packages. Cans are available in multi-packs including: 6-, 12-, 15-, 18-, 24-, 30-, 36-, and 42-packs of 12-ounce cans.

National Brewing Company introduced Colt 45 in 1963. Previously, the only major national brand of malt liquor was Country Club. The label was designed with a kicking horse and horseshoe, a reference to its "extra kick" compared to competing brands.

Listed on the Pabst website as a "Fun Fact", Colt 45 was named after running back #45 Jerry Hill of the 1963 Baltimore Colts and not the .45 caliber handgun ammunition round.

The label has a long-time advertising association with actor Billy Dee Williams, who has been seen in print ads, on billboards and in television ads for Colt 45 starting in the 1980s. The product's slogan during that era, as stated by Williams in his television commercials, was, "It works every time." Williams responded indifferently to criticism of his appearances in the liquor commercials.

Colt 45 makers experimented briefly with a mint-flavored derivative, marketed under the name Cool Colt, in the early 1990s. Available in limited quantities, it was largely met with puzzlement from loyal customers. While it was in production, the slogan for Cool Colt was "Taste the Cool."

A double malt version—titled Colt 45 Double Malt—is also produced; and in certain regions, such as Montana, has 8.5% abv. Sold in only certain regions, the label is distinguishable by two horseshoes rather than the standard single one.

Coors Light

imageCoors Light

Coors Light is a 4.2% ABV light beer brewed in Golden, Colorado and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was first produced in 1978 by the Coors Brewing Company.

The beer has a "Cold Certified" label which turns the mountains on the label from white to blue when the beer's temperature is lowered to 39 degrees fahrenheit. Coors Light has a "mountain icon" to represent the beer in place of the logo. The icon is a stylized drawing of a mountain with two peaks. The bottom has a tail that signifies movement.

Adolph Coors was born in 1847 in a German town known today as Wuppertal-Oberbarmen. At the age of 14 he began working at the Henry Wenker Brewery in Dortmund,. Adolph Coors considered that water was the key ingredient for a perfect beer. Therefore, he decided to locate Adolph Coors Company in Golden, Colorado in 1873. The Rocky Mountains are the primary source of the water used in the beer.

There were a number of trends occurring in the mid-1970s. Health was one of the most discussed topics in the American population. The baby-boomer generation was reaching their drinking age, and therefore they gave the beer drinking demographic a shift. They were concerned about their health, but they also wanted to drink beer. There was a growing interest in low-calorie beverages. In 1975, light beers made up only 1% of beer consumption in the United States, and by 1994, they accounted for 35% of all domestic beer sold in the United States. In 1978, Coors introduced the popular Coors Light brand.

Coors Light advertisings highlight the quality of the beer as the most refreshing place on earth. Additionally, Coors Light ads are designed to target young demographics. The stories behind the ads seek to capture the attention of young people, situating them in cool places they would like to be. Cavalry Agency out of Chicago, IL, is the current Advertising Agency for Coors Light. They are responsible for the 'Reach For The Cold' Campaign featuring the Coors Light Explorers. Additionally, on April 2013, the agency produced a Digital Video for Coors Light ad known as Coors Light the brewer ambushes a summer pool party with the frosty taste of winter. The T.V. ad was considered the ad of the week in the Adweek publication.

National Bohemian

National Bohemian Beer, colloquially "Natty Boh," is an American beer originally brewed in Baltimore, Maryland, but now owned by the Pabst Brewing Company. First brewed in 1885 by the National Brewing Company, whose other brands were National Premium and Colt 45 malt liquor, this Bohemian-style beer's slogan had long been "From the Land of Pleasant Living," a reference to the Chesapeake Bay.

Nearly 90 percent of National Bohemian sales are in Baltimore. The beer is currently brewed under contract at the MillerCoors brewing facilities in Eden, NC and Albany, GA, and owned by Pabst Brewing Company.

For a time, National's president Jerold Hoffberger also owned the Baltimore Orioles; Natty Boh was served at Memorial Stadium and became the "official" beer of Baltimore in the late 1960s. The "Land of Pleasant Living" slogan reached its peak during the mid-late 1960s when National acquired a Chesapeake Bay skipjack (local sailing vessel) and named it the "Chesterpeake" after a pelican who appeared in their ads. The Chesterpeake travelled throughout the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay visiting various local festivals, regattas, yacht clubs, etc. and was also seen in television commercials.

After a 1975 merger with Canadian brewer Carling, the Baltimore brewery located at the intersection of O'Donnell and Conkling streets was closed in 1978 and production moved to the company's facility in nearby Halethorpe. Carling-National was itself bought out by the G. Heileman Brewing Company in 1979. Heileman added Tuborg to the list of beers brewed in Halethorpe.

Diamond Knot Brewing Company

Diamond Knot Brewing Company is a brewery and operator of alehouses in Mukilteo, Washington, USA.

Diamond Knot Craft Brewing was established in October 1994 by two Boeing employees. The two handled all production and distribution in the evenings over the first four years out of subleased space in an alehouse. In March 1999, the alehouse was acquired. It was improved to increase capacity to about 1,200 barrels a year. The brewery was not able to meet demand. Capacity was quadrupled in 2005 with the opening of a 4,300-square-foot (400 m2) facility.

According to The Seattle Times, the brewery is "widely regarded as producing some of the best, most innovative beers in the region". The India Pale Ale is the brewery's flagship beer. Diamond Knot has also produced a stronger "Industrial XIPA". The Brown Ale is another popular selection.

Diamond Knot is the first microbrewery in Mukilteo and the oldest in Snohomish County. The original alehouse features stone grill cooking. In addition to the Brewery & Alehouse on the Mukilteo waterfront, the company operates the Brewpub @ MLT in Mountlake Terrace, WA and also the Production Brewery & Taproom in at the company's headquarters.

The brewery was established by Bob Maphet and Brian Sollenberger. The two met at a beer club organized by Boeing employees in Everett, Washington. They kept their day jobs and annual production originally was limited to about 600 barrels. In November 2009, Sollenberger died in an accident at home. Sollenberger was a Boeing Engineering Manager for the 787 Dreamliner. Another aerospace engineer, Andrew Ong, co-founded 2Brothers Brewery near Melbourne, Australia, after receiving hands-on experience at Diamond Knot.

Dobler Brewing Company

The Dobler Brewing Company was a small regional brewery, located in Albany, New York. Dobler was once located in the largest brewing hub in the country. Before there was Anheuser-Busch, Coors, and Miller, there was Hedrick, Beverwyck, and of course Dobler. It was founded in 1865, and had an annual capacity of 25,000 barrels during its height.

The brewery was one of only three breweries in Albany to survive Prohibition. Their ability to remain in business during prohibition was due to the fact that the brewery was equipped with refrigeration, and was easily able to convert to soda production. Refrigeration had been necessary to produce their line of Lager, and this equipment gave Dobler an advantage during the prohibition years, when only non-alcoholic beverages were legal.

Although Hedrick, Beverwyck and Dobler endured Prohibition, they never regained national distribution; by the 1970s they were outsourced by the big Midwestern breweries. The Dobler Brewery closed in 1960, shortly after being sold to Hampden-Harvard Breweries of Willimansett, Massachusetts. The main building where the brewery once stood was demolished in 1960. However, an adjacent building which served as the carriage house for the delivery horses still stands.
