Crouch Vale Brewery

imageCrouch Vale Brewery

The Crouch Vale Brewery is an independent brewery based in South Woodham Ferrers, Essex, England. Its name is derived from its proximity to the River Crouch, and having been established in 1981, it is the oldest brewer in Essex. They have a roster of regular draught beers which are produced year round, as well as several popular seasonal beers which are produced at certain times of the year.

Being an Essex based brewery, their beers are most widely available in the South East of England but the popularity of the beers leads to them often being dispensed at beer festivals in more remote locations. Despite their traditionalism, the brewers have a propensity for use of foreign hops (largely from the U.S. and Germany); this is especially true of their seasonal brews, which can often be more 'experimental' than their regular ales, but no less popular.

The brewery's flagship ale is Crouch Vale Brewers Gold, and accounts for more than 50% of their total output. This particular beer, a 4.0% Golden Ale, was the winner of the Champion Beer of Britain award at both the 2005 and 2006 Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Great British Beer Festivals.

Dark Star Brewery

Dark Star is a brewery in Partridge Green, Sussex, England.

Dark Star was originally the name of a porter developed by Rob Jones when he was employed by the Pitfield Brewery. It was highly successful, being voted Champion Beer of Britain in 1987. He took the recipe with him when he moved to the brewery based at the Evening Star. The beer itself is now known as Dark Star Original.

The Dark Star Brewery Company started, in 1994, as a small plant squeezed into a corner of the cellar of The Evening Star Pub, in Brighton. The company was founded by entrepreneur Peter Halliday, publican Peter Skinner, and brewer Rob Jones. At that time it was known as Skinner's brewery, but there was another Skinner's brewery in Cornwall, so the name was changed to Dark Star, after Jones's successful recipe for porter.(The resemblance between the names "Dark Star" and "Evening Star" is coincidental). It soon became apparent before long that the brewery could not keep up with the growing demand from the Evening Star’s drinkers, let alone the demand for its beers from other pubs.

In 2001 the brewery relocated to a new purpose-built brewery in Ansty, near Haywards Heath, from where it supplied the Evening Star with a selection of its beers, along with its sister pubs: The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield and The Duke of Wellington, Shoreham-by-Sea. A free trade to other pubs in Sussex and the rest of the UK developed at this time. Upon moving to Ansty, Mark Tranter became Head Brewer before leaving the business in March 2013.

A new 16,000-square-foot (1,500 m2) site in Partridge Green was opened by Roger Protz in early 2010. This led to a fourfold increase in production, and Dark Star becoming the second largest brewery in Sussex In 2011 the brewery acquired The Partridge public house in Partridge Green as a brewery tap.

Devenish Brewery

Brewers Quay is a converted Victorian brewery near the Old Harbour in Weymouth, Dorset, southern England. It was formerly the Devenish Brewery and then was an indoor shopping complex with around twenty specialty shops together with heritage and science exhibits, until it was closed in 2011. The front of Brewers Quay is Hope Square, which holds a range of cafes, bars, bistros, whilst close by is the Tudor House Museum, and facing out to sea is Nothe Fort and its gardens. Brewers Quay has been a Grade II Listed Building since 1974.

Beer was brewed on the site for hundreds of years, since at least 1252. It was the chosen as the site for a brewery as water was close by coming from a spring at Chapelhay and nearby at Radipole there were barley fields. In 1742 the brewery was owned by the Flew family before the Devenish family took over the entire site at the building in the 1820s and they continued brewing beer here up until 1985. There were three separate breweries in the area for many years; the smallest, Davis Brewery, ceased working in the early 19th century, and Groves continued until 1960 when it was incorporated with Devenish. Once the brewery closed in 1985, the building was transformed. The Warehouse Theatre in nearby Hope Street was formerly used as the main coal storage for the Devenish Brewery. Within Brewer's Quay, at the top of the building, there was an exhibition of brewing, which told the building's seven hundred years of brewing history, and of the Devenish family and their nearby rivals.

During the late 20th century, the building was subject to major adaptation via co-operation between the Local Authority and the owners, as part of a general upgrading of the whole area. A shopping centre was established with a pub and restaurant, along with over 20 specialist shops, from hand-made crafts, jewellery, glassware, books, cards, confectionery, children's toys, art and autographs to various other gifts.

The complex was hailed as "the Covent Garden of Dorset" when it was opened in 1990 as the fulcrum of rejuvenation of the old brewery and harbourside. Soon after opening, the complex won the Come to Britain Trophy, a major commendation from Business and Industry, a Commitment to the Environment Award and a Civic Society award. In 2010 it was reported that an estimated 750,000 people visited the centre every year, compared to 100,000 in 1990.

Donnington Brewery

The Donnington Brewery is a small brewery in the village of Donnington near Stow-on-the-Wold in Gloucestershire, England.

There are ten workers at the brewery and with the help of one lorry and a van they deliver 2,000 gallons of beer a week throughout the winter, rising to 3,500 in the summer. This includes three bottled beers – Light, Brown and Double D – that are non-pasteurised and sit working in the bottle for up to five weeks.

Thomas Arkell began brewing at this site in 1865. The brewery was later run by a descendant, Claude Arkell, until his death in 2007 when it passed to Claude's cousins, Peter and James from Arkell's Brewery.

Donnington Brewery brews two draught beers, SBA and BB, having stopped making its Mild XXX a couple of years ago. These are sold through its 15 tied pubs around the Cotswolds.

There were two more tied pubs. The Merry Mouth is still trading but no longer owned by Donnington. The Bell at Winchcombe was sold by its last landlord and the site converted into a number of houses.

A "Donnington run" means visiting all 15 pubs in a single evening. A path called the Donnington Way connects all the 15 pubs.
