Three Tuns Brewery

The Three Tuns Brewery is a brewery in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, England, established in 1642 on its current site, making it the oldest licensed brewery site in Britain. While some of the current building dates to the seventeenth century, the main building is a Victorian tower brewery erected about 1888, making it one of only four brewers in the United Kingdom to use such a method to brew beer.

The brewery is Grade Two listed, described as "a rare survival of a small, working rural brewery".

In January 2003, the brewery was sold to the John Roberts' Brewing Co. Ltd. Owners John Russell and Bill Bainbridge refitted the brewery with modern brewing equipment whilst 100 tonnes of steel was used to uphold the structure of the tower.

As of December 2012, the brewery has six regular ales. Emphasis is placed upon pale ale, with Maris Otter Malts being used frequently to achieve the pale-straw, light-tan and golden colours brewed.

During 2013, the Three Tuns plans to expand the brewery to make room to facilitate more fermenting vessels and create more jobs, remaining within its 17th century building and excavating down into the cellar. The new fermenting vessels would raise capacity from about 100 brewers barrels per week to 160.

Thwaites Brewery

imageDaniel Thwaites plc

Thwaites Brewery is a regional brewery founded in 1807 by Daniel Thwaites in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. The firm still operates from its original town centre site, although the original brewery was demolished in 2011, and the majority of its beer business was sold to Marston's in March 2015. In 1999, the Mitchell brewery in Lancaster closed down, and was bought in part by Thwaites. Lancaster Bomber has since been available from Thwaites public houses after being acquired in the takeover. Thwaites also has a hotels division, which is called Shire Hotels. Lancaster Bomber is now brewed by Marston's, as is Wainwright, the other top-selling Thwaite's beer.

The company has over 350 pubs in the North of England reaching from the North Lakes area down to Solihull & Leicestershire.

The brewery invested heavily in pasteurised keg beers, especially those powered by nitro in the 1990s. However, it is now working to increase the market for its cask beers. Thwaites unveiled a new craft brewery in December 2011 named "Crafty Dan".

Local brewer and pub retailer Daniel Thwaites has been based in Lancashire since 1807.

Born in 1777, Daniel Thwaites first began brewing in Blackburn in 1807 when he joined the 'Eanam Brewery' in partnership with local businessmen, Edward Duckworth and William Clayton. At the age of 31, Daniel married Edward's daughter Betty, who later inherited her father's share of the company following his death in 1822.

In 1824, the Brewery became the sole property of 'Thwaites' when William Clayton sold his remaining share of the cony to Daniel.

Daniel and Betty Thwaites went on to have twelve children, four sons and eight daughters. Daniel Thwaites Jnr was born in 1817, the sixth of their twelve children. Daniel Thwaites Jnr and his brothers John and Thomas later inherited the brewery following the death of their father, Daniel Thwaites Snr, in 1843.

The decade of the 1850s was one of growth for the brewery and increasing prosperity for the Thwaites partners. Thomas left the partnership and in 1858, following the earlier death of his mother and the retirement of his other brother, John, Daniel Thwaites Jnr became the sole owner of the brewery. One year later, he married Eliza Amelia Gregory and they had a son, Edward, who died in infancy and daughter, Elma Amy Thwaites.

The official announcement of the dissolution of the partnership published in the London Gazette on 25 February 1859 stated that it was by mutual consent. Daniel, who ran the brewery with the help of manager Joseph Smith and property adviser Henry Gornall had now been a partner for fifteen years. During this period he expanded the firm and shown himself to be an astute, ambitious and experienced brewer.

Lyme Regis /ˌlaɪmˈriːdʒɪs/ is a coastal town in West Dorset, England, situated 25 miles (40 km) west of Dorchester and 25 miles (40 km) east of Exeter. The town lies in Lyme Bay, on the English Channel coast at the Dorset–Devon border. It is nicknamed "The Pearl of Dorset". The town is noted for the fossils found in the cliffs and beaches, which are part of the Heritage Coast—known commercially as the Jurassic Coast—a World Heritage Site.

The harbour wall, known as "The Cobb", features in Jane Austen's novel Persuasion, and in The French Lieutenant's Woman, a novel by British writer John Fowles, as well as the 1981 film of the same name, which was partly filmed in Lyme Regis.

The town was home to Admiral Sir George Somers, its one-time mayor and parliamentarian. He founded the English colonial settlement of the Somers Isles, better known as Bermuda. Lyme Regis is twinned with St. George's, Bermuda. In July 2015 Lyme Regis was also 'tripled' with Jamestown, Virginia to form the Historic Atlantic Triangle between Lyme, St George's and Jamestown.

Triple fff Brewery

The Triple fff Brewing Company Ltd is a small independent brewer of real ale based in Four Marks, Alton, Hampshire, England, founded in November 1997, and producing award-winning bitters, milds and stouts. They own two pubs, the Railway Arms in Alton and The White Lion in Aldershot.

Triple fff was launched in 1997 by Graham Trott, and his partner Frank. They installed a 5 barrel plant in one of the units vacated by the now closed furniture factory on Station Approach in the village of Four Marks.

Graham and Frank took a musical theme for their brewery name as triple fff is the strong note; louder, louder, louder. Some people found the name amusing, and referred to their beer as: Frank's Flushing Fluid. Franks' share of the business was bought out after a few years by Graham.

The beer names came from song titles of the 60s rock icons, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin and Cream with Moondance (4.2%ABV), Stairway (4.6%ABV) and the Pressed Rat and Warthog (3.8%ABV).

The year 2000 saw an expansion into an 18 Barrel plant and in 2006 the brewery became a 50 Barrel system brewing over 31,000 pints a week.

The brewery produces real ale and has won over 35 awards, including overall Champion Beer of Britain at the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Great British Beer Festival. They use ingredients, including Maris Otter Barley malted in the traditional way at Warminster Maltings. Their beers include:

A recent venture has been to produce a beer from a recipe by Gilbert White, the famous naturalist born in 1720 in nearby Selborne. The recipe uses hops and smoked barley.

Vaux Breweries

imageVaux Breweries

Vaux Breweries was a major brewer based in Sunderland, England. It was listed on the .

The company was founded in 1806 by Cuthbert Vaux (1779-1850), producing several popular brands including Maxim, Double Maxim, and Sunderland. For nearly 200 years it was a major employer in the city.

In 1972, the company bought the Sheffield-based Wards Brewing Company, which it retained as a separate subsidiary. In 1981, it attempted to establish a foothold in the U.S. with the purchase of the New York-based family-owned Fred Koch Brewery.

By the 1990s, the Vaux Group had expanded into hotels. Despite the brewing business being profitable and an offer to buy it having been received from management, in March 1999 the Board accepted the advice of the Corporate Financier, BT Alex. Brown, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank, and decided to close both breweries. This caused Chairman Sir Paul Nicholson, who disagreed with the closure decision, to resign. The company changed its name to Swallow Group plc, and in July sold its tenanted pub estate to a client of the corporate financier, concentrating on Swallow Hotels business and incorporating the former Vaux-managed pub estate under the Swallow Inns & Restaurants brand. The company was taken over by Whitbread in 2000, following which most of the hotels were rebranded as Marriott and the larger pubs were brought under other national brands, such as Brewers Fayre. Later, 10 hotels unsuitable for Marriott conversions were sold off, forming the nucleus of the current Swallow Hotels chain.

In 2000, two former Vaux directors and the former head brewer formed the Double Maxim Beer Company, buying the beer brands and recipes. They resurrected the former Samson and Double Maxim lines. The Sunderland brewery was later vacated and the buildings were demolished for redevelopment.
