Swan Brewery

Coordinates: 31°57′55″S 115°50′26″E / 31.96528°S 115.84056°E / -31.96528; 115.84056

The Swan Brewery is a brewing company, whose brewery was located in Perth, Western Australia.

The brewing of beer in Western Australia commenced with the Albion Brewery which opened in 1837 at the foot of Spring Street and Mounts Bay Road, central Perth by James Stokes. In 1880 Stokes constructed a second brewery, the Stanley Brewery, together with an icehouse and malthouse at the foot of Mount Eliza in 1848, using compensation he had been paid by the British Government after his attempts to start a distillery were thwarted by an Act of Parliament. The Stanley Brewery was later leased by John Ferguson, a Scottish sea captain, who appointed a German brewer, William Mumme, to manage the brewery.

In 1857 Frederick Sherwood established a new brewery at the foot of what is now Sherwood Court in Perth, calling it the Swan Brewery, after the black swans that he had seen on the river. Sherwood inherited a successful building firm from his father Richard in 1831 and migrated to the Swan River Colony, with his wife Jessey and three children in 1843. Sherwood, who had been working as an architect/surveyor/builder, established the brewery after the death of his wife, in order to support his six children. He saw the Swan River as the ideal place to build a brewery, as the Swan provided fresh, clean water for making the beer, hiring convicts as a source of cheap labour.

Thunder Road Brewing Company

Thunder Road Brewing Company is an independent brewery operating in the Melbourne inner suburb of Brunswick, Australia. Since opening its doors for business in 2011, the brewery’s beers have been distributed for sale in Melbourne and distribution is now expanding throughout Australia. Thunder Road Brewing Company brews year-round flagship beers including Full Steam Pale Lager, Collingwood Draught, Hop Star, Brunswick Bitter, as well as limited release seasonal beers, for on-tap sales. In 2015, the company also introduced its first line of packaged beer, the Double Fermentation Series, and began a range of barrel aged beers known as the "President's Reserve" series.

The company is an active supporter of local sporting clubs, cultural events and local and national philanthropic organisations. It is a sponsor of the local Brunswick Women's Australian Rules Football club, the Brunswick Renegades. The company also sponsors a local fist-ball team - the Fistroy Lions.

In June 2014, Thunder Road held a major philanthropic event to raise money for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) and donated over $10,000 to the charity. The event attempted a "world record" by having the most people to ever brew a single batch of beer and drew over 800 "volunteer" brewers in a single day of brewing. The beer was subsequently bottled and labeled "Be Strong Ale" based on volunteers voting for the beer's name and given to volunteer brewers.

The company is also a multiyear sponsor of the Brunswick Music Festival, a multi-week musical festival that highlights established and up and coming musical acts both from Australian and from overseas, and the annual associated Sydney Road Street Party, which routinely draws tens of thousands of attendees. Both events are supported by the local Moreland Council, which encompasses the suburb of Brunswick.

In 2012 Thunder Road Brewing Company undertook legal action to unlock the trademarks to 59 heritage beer brands (including Ballarat Bitter, Richmond Lager, Kent, NQ Lager and Bulimba Gold Top) that had been acquired by CUB but were no longer in use as Thunder Road Brewing planned to release its own beers under the same names.

In September 2013 the Australian Trade Marks Office denied the request. However, the Trade Mark Office agreed with the company's central argument regarding “non-use.” In total, with 53 of the 54 trade marks at issue – grounds for “non-use” applications were established. Furthermore, ten additional CUB trade marks were ordered removed from the trademark register. The remaining marks stayed on the register through the exercise of the Registrar's discretion.

Tooheys Brewery

imageTooheys

Tooheys is a brewery in the suburb of Lidcombe, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It produces beers and ciders under the Tooheys and Hahn Brewery trademarks, and is part of the Lion beverages group which was acquired by the Japanese Kirin Company in 2009.

Tooheys dates from 1869, when John Thomas Toohey (an Irish immigrant to Melbourne) obtained his brewing licence. Toohey and his brother James Matthew ran pubs in Melbourne (The Limerick Arms and The Great Britain) before moving to Sydney in the 1860s. They commenced brewing Tooheys Black Old Ale in a brewery in the area of present-day Darling Harbour. By 1875, demand for their beer had soared and they established The Standard Brewery in inner-city Surry Hills. In 1902, the company went public as Tooheys Limited, and commenced brewing lager (the present-day Tooheys New) in 1930. In 1955, the brewery moved west to Lidcombe. In 1967, Tooheys bought competitor Miller's Brewers located in Taverner's Hill, closing that brewery in 1975.

In 1980, NSW-based Tooheys merged with Queensland's Castlemaine Perkins to form Castlemaine Tooheys.Bond Corporation purchased Castlemaine Tooheys in 1985.

Castlemaine Tooheys were represented as the appellants in the landmark 1990 case of Castlemaine Tooheys Ltd v South Australia, heard by the High Court of Australia. Since the brewery operated outside South Australia, but sold its products there, a South Australian Act Amendment, imposing a substantial refund value for non-refillable bottles produced in other states, was ruled to be inconsistent with section 92 of the Constitution of Australia. Due to the significant discriminatory and protectionist financial impacts that they faced, Castlemaine Tooheys successfully invalidated the law.

Tooheys Extra Dry

Tooheys Extra Dry, commonly referred to as a TED (Tooheys Extra Dry), is a dry style lager brewed by Lion in the Tooheys Brewery at Lidcombe, New South Wales, Australia. Lion has been owned by Japanese conglomerate Kirin Holdings Company Limited since 2009.

Tooheys Extra Dry is sold throughout Australia, though only available in bottles (345ml and 696ml) until late 2005 when it began to be sold on tap.

It is the 5th most popular beer in Australia, by volume sold.

In May 2006, Tooheys Extra Dry Platinum, a beer with increased alcohol content of 6.5% (later reduced to 5.2%), was launched, with the first shipment selling out in days. It is sold in 8-packs as opposed to the traditional 6-packs most bottled beers are packaged in.

Tooheys Extra Dry is well known throughout Australia due to obscure television advertisements which include a walking tongue, fighting whitegoods, a farmer who clones himself, some cool-cats chasing a box of TED's, and the nocturnal migration of the Tooheys stag.

In 2013, Tooheys Extra Dry launched Repay Your Mouth, a campaign encouraging drinkers to repay their mouth for prior abuses, highlighting the ‘Crisp Clean Taste’ of TED. Examples of ‘mouth abuse’ include kissing a dog, lying to your girlfriend, laughing at your boss’ unfunny jokes, and ignoring the 3 second rule.

Continuing TED’s history of sponsoring major events, it has been confirmed that in 2014, TED will be sponsoring events around Australia, including Surfest, Bluesfest Byron Bay, Rip Curl Pro, Nitro Circus, Spartan Race, and Tough Mudder.

Tooheys New

imageTooheys New

Tooheys New is a standard Australian lager and the most popular of the Tooheys' beers owned by the New Zealand Lion Nathan beverages company.

It can be found on tap at almost any bar in New South Wales. It was first brewed in 1931 and was marketed under the name Tooheys New Special. In the 1970s, the beer began being marketed as Tooheys New Special Draught when sold in cans and bottles, later shortened to Tooheys Draught. Tap beer was still sold as Tooheys New, however. In 1998, the company decided to sell the beer under one name across all modes as Tooheys New.

Currently Tooheys New is official sponsor of the New South Wales Rugby Union's club competition (the Tooheys New Cup), is the official beer of the Wallabies and sponsors the Melbourne Cup. Through 2006, it was also naming sponsor of the Australian section of the Super 14 Rugby Competition, but was replaced by Investec Bank after their sponsorship contract expired.

In the mid-1970s the beer was successfully promoted with a jingle 'I feel like a Tooheys or two', one of the more successful campaigns in Australian advertising. The jingle's ubiquitous presence registered such that when school children were tested and asked to complete the following: ‘I feel like…’ For the vast majority there was only one right answer: ‘A Tooheys’ The jingle also made an impression on touring rocker David Bowie who sang it during the encore of his final Australian concert in 1978.

Around 2008/09, Tooheys New began a marketing campaign, to have only 5 ingredients. Malt, hops, barley, yeast and sugar to break away from previous brew with many additives.

In September 2008, Tooheys came out with a low-carbohydrate beer product called Tooheys New White Stag. It is a full strength beer with the claim of "only one third of the carbs of standard full strength beers". The name has be re-used from Tooheys Stag lager released in 1930. Toohey's advertising blurb claims that New is equivalent to the old Stag lager.

Tooth and Co.

Tooth and Co was the major brewer of beer in New South Wales, Australia. The company owned a large brewery on Broadway in Sydney from 1835 until 1985, known as the Kent Brewery. It was historically one of Australia’s oldest companies, having been established as a partnership in 1835 and listed on the then Sydney Stock Exchange in July 1961. The brand has undergone a revival in 2015.

John Tooth emigrated to Australia in the early 1830s, traded for a time as a general merchant, and then in 1835, with his brother-in-law, John Newnham, opened a brewery in Sydney. He named the brewery Kent Brewery. It was incorporated as a company in 1888.

The Tooth family had interests in banking, agriculture and real estate and could afford to support their brewing operations through the turbulent times of the late 19th century, enabling the brewer to become the dominant maker of beer into the 20th century. Tooth's major asset was Kent Brewery, although Tooth had numerous other assets; it owned Blue Bow Cordials (which later produced Blue Bow Lemonade), it acquired the Maltings at Mittagong in 1905,Maltings at Carlton Street, Sydney, the Reschs Waverley Brewery in 1921, numerous hotels and considerable land. Tooth owned the New South Wales franchise of Hungry Jack's, although it failed to exploit the franchise. It also owned the d'Albora Marina. For a short period from 1978 it also owned the Courage Brewery in Victoria, and a brewery at Tuncester, near Lismore. For a period it owned Penfolds Wines, and Penfolds' subsidiary, the Koala Motel Chain. The Tooth family is also famous for building the 'Swifts' mansion at Darling Point in Sydney.

Kent Brewery was built on Blackwattle Creek in 1835. The original Tooth and Co produced many beers, of which only two remain on the market - KB Lager and Kent Old Brown. Kent brewery was substantially damaged by a fire in about 1900. In 1913 Tooth and Co acquired the Maitland Brewing Company. In 1921, Tooth and Co took over Reschs and their "Waverley" brewery on South Dowling Street in Redfern. Acquisition was conditional that Tooth would not change the original recipe for Reschs Beer. In 1921 Tooth also acquired a Newcastle brewery, the Castlemaine Brewery and Wood Brothers Company. Tooth later made an unsuccessful attempt to acquire the Millers Brewery (Owned by trucking magnate RW Miller), located at Taverner's Hill in Sydney. In 1967, Millers Brewery was sold to rivals, Tooheys.

Tooheys Pils

Tooheys Pils was an Australian pilsner produced by Tooheys. It was launched in November 1998, and ceased production in late 2011. It was originally brewed with Saaz hops; however, due to production and supply issues, it was later brewed with Hallertau hops from Bavaria, Germany. It was described as a light, refreshing beer with a crisp, hoppy finish without a lingering aftertaste. By June 2008, Tooheys had decided to lessen the alcohol content to 4.5% and give the bottle a more appealing look.

VB Gold

In 2007, Fosters launched a new, midstrength version of VB called VB Midstrength Lager with an alcohol volume of 3.5%, in order to capitalise on the growing market for midstrength beers, currently dominated by XXXX Gold. VB Midstrength changed its name to VB Gold in 2009 and sells over 1m cases every year and is growing strongly following its launch in late 2007.

TV builder Scott Cam, a self-confessed VB fan, is the appointed VB Mid Ambassador.

On 24 July 2007, The Australian reported that within three months of Fosters launching VB Midstrength, market share for the full strength VB and mid VB had increased. Foster's regional marketing director Anthony Heraghty hinted at further VB brand extensions, saying Foster's was "trying to see past the big green giant".

During the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, VB Gold was advertised on TV by Australian Rugby League legends Wally Lewis and Gorden Tallis.

Victoria Bitter

imageVictoria Bitter

Victoria Bitter (VB) is a lager produced by Carlton & United Breweries, a subsidiary of Foster's Group in Melbourne, Victoria. It was first brewed by Thomas Aitken at Victoria Brewery in 1854. It is one of the highest selling beers in Australia.

The origins of Victoria Bitter date back to Victoria Brewery founder and head brewer Thomas Aitken, who developed the recipe in 1854. The beer began to gain wide popularity in the mid 1960s with an innovative television advertising campaign featuring a very similar recording of the theme from the film The Magnificent Seven, images of working-class Australians at work and play, and a voice-over by notable Australian actor John Meillon. The campaign was used until quite recently.

Like most Australian Lagers, VB is made using a wortstream brewing process, and uses a portion of cane sugar to thin out the body of the beer.

Currently one third of the packaged beer sales in Australia are of VB. It is available in 375 mL cans ("tinnies"), short-necked 375 mL bottles ("stubbies"), 750 mL bottles ("Long Necks", "King Browns" or "Tallies") and "Twisties", "Throwies" (slang for "Throwdowns", because they are generally consumed within a short period of time) or "Grenades" (250 ml bottles). As of 2005 VB also comes in 500 ml tinnies ("Lunch Greens"), which are commonly drunk by trade workers on lunch, being just enough to quench their thirst. It used to be available in the Northern Territory in a 1-litre tinnie nicknamed a 'Killer can' (Kilo can). As with all packaged beer sold in Australia it was for many years only available in 750 mL or 26 2/3 fl oz (1/6 imperial gallon) bottles, until the introduction of "stubbies" and smaller cans.

In July 2007 Foster's announced it would cut the alcohol content of VB from 4.9% to 4.8% in a bid to save millions of dollars in tax payments. The brewer cut the alcohol percentage of VB further in 2009, reducing it to 4.6% in an effort to make further savings. On 3 September 2012, CUB announced VB would be going back to its original 4.9% alcohol recipe and its original packaging. CUB had received many complaints since it was changed to 4.6% in 2009, and the beer had lost a large amount of market share. The updated VBs began rolling out in late October 2012.

In 2016, VB was among the CUB products boycotted by unions after 55 CUB workers were allegedly sacked after refusing a 65% wage cut. The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union has said that they will not stop the boycott until the situation is rectified.
