4 Pines Brewing Company

The 4 Pines Brewing Company is a microbrewery established in 2008 in Manly, New South Wales.

In 2010 the company, in partnership with space engineering firm, Saber Astronautics Australia, worked on developing the first space-certified beer.

In 2011 the company opened a new brewing facility in Brookvale, with 50hL brewery and bottling line and a small small batch “Keller Door” 5hL brewery. In early 2014 they expanded the company's Brookdale facility.

At the inaugural Craft Beer Industry Awards in 2014 4 Pines Brewing Company and Two Birds Brewing were named joint winners of the 'Bintani Champion Large Brewery Award', with the company also winning the 'Champion Pale Ale' for its ESB.

In 2015 4 Pines Brewing Company won the 'GrainCorp Trophy for Champion Large Australian Brewery' at the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA).

Bluetongue Brewery was an Australian beer company owned by SABMiller. The brewery had a capacity of 100 million litres per annum, and supplied beer to all Australian states. On 23 January 2014, it was announced that Bluetongue would be phased out and discontinued as a brand.

Bluetongue Brewery was founded in 2003 by four Hunter Valley businessmen, Philip Hele, Bruce Tyrrell, Ian Burford and Paul Hannan in Cameron Park, Hunter Valley. In 2005 they sold a 50% share in the brewery to interests associated with John Singleton. In December 2007 the consortium sold the brewery to Pacific Beverages, a joint venture between Coca-Cola Amatil and SABMiller. In November 2010 the company opened a $120M (AUS) brewery in the Central Coast suburb of Warnervale to produce and package the Bluetongue premium beer brands. The brewery, the second largest in New South Wales had the initial capacity of 50 million litres per annum. In 2012, Coca-Cola Amatil sold their 50% share in Pacific Beverages to SABMiller, who had acquired Carlton & United Breweries (the Australian Beer, Cider & Spirits (BCS) division of the Foster's Group).

On 23 January 2014, SABMiller announced that the Bluetongue brand would be discontinued. 64 staff at the Warnervale brewery were told by Carlton and United Breweries they would lose their jobs towards the middle of the year and that the brewing equipment would be relocated to its Yatala brewery in Queensland with the remaining assets to be sold off.

Hahn Brewery

Hahn Brewery was established by Dr Charles "Chuck" Hahn in 1988 at an old factory site in the suburb of Camperdown in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

It was originally a brewer of premium beers, including Hahn Premium and Hahn Premium Light. The 1991 recession resulted in reduced demand, and forced a rethink of this policy. A more mainstream beer called Sydney Bitter was produced, with reasonable success. It has launched two new beers since then: Hahn Super Dry in 2006 and Hahn Super Dry 3.5 in 2009.

In 1993 the brewery was purchased by an Australia's second largest brewer Lion Chuck was appointed as the Chief Brewer of Lion Co which, at the time, operated eight breweries in Australia and New Zealand and two in China. Production of Hahn beers was moved to the Tooheys brewery in Auburn. The Camperdown brewery itself was renamed to the Malt Shovel Brewery in honour of the 1st fleet convict turned Australia's first brewer, James Squire. To this day, Chuck Hahn still plays a key role in brewing the craft beers at the Malt Shovel Brewery.

The Malt Shovel Brewery is an Australian brewery owned by Lion and located in Camperdown, New South Wales. It is best known for the James Squire range of beers. The beer is named after the convict turned Australia's first brewer James Squire, who also went on the grow Australia's first hops and is said to have created Australia's first commercial brewery.

In 1988, master brewer Chuck Hahn established the Hahn Brewery (then Australia's largest microbrewery) in a former horse stables and later furniture factory, in Camperdown, an inner-city suburb of Sydney. In 1993, the boutique beer-making operation received financial support from Lion. In late 1998, the brewery was relaunched as the Australian craft-brewing arm of Lion, and was renamed the Malt Shovel Brewery, after the James Squire's original brewery tavern ("The Malting Shovel"). The Malt Shovel Brewery produces boutique beers in small batches and in honour of Australia’s first brewer, the brewery named their range of pale ales, ales and porters 'James Squire'. In 2003, the business produced four million litres of beer and in 2010 it had increased to 4.74 million litres. In 2008, the brewery acquired the adjoining building, which allowed the company to expand both its production and storage facilities.

The company has also established a number of brewpubs, with the Crafty Squire Brewhouse on Russell Street, Melbourne, the Squire's Maiden on Honeysuckle Drive, Newcastle, the Squire's Fortune on The Esplanade, Perth, the Generous Squire on Murray Street, Perth, the Curious Squire on O’Connell Street, North Adelaide, and the Charming Squire on Grey Street, Brisbane.

St Arnou is one of the first Australian craft beer companies established in 2001, located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and privately owned. In 2002 the company opended its first brewpub at the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane.

In 1999, Brian Watson, opened the St Arnou Brewery Restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand. In July 2001 the business was incorporated into a new Australian brewing operation, St Arnou Limited, set up by Matthew Beggs. Watson became responsible for sales, marketing and production. The company is named after Saint Arnoul, the patron saint of hop-pickers and Belgian brewers.

Initially the company only offered draught beer however in 2006 they commenced bottling and distributing the St Arnou Premium Blonde, a Belgian-style pale lager. This was followed with the release of the St Arnou Pilsner and then the St Arnou Premium Light. The company entered into a national distribution arrangement with Margaret River winery, Watershed Premium Wines, which led to their products being widely available throughout Australia and Singapore. The company originally brewed its beers in Queensland and New South Wales, before utilising Australian Independent Brewers facilities in Smeaton Grange, near Sydney.

The beer is brewed in New South Wales using raw ingredients sourced from within Australia and around the world.

Tooheys Brewery

Tooheys

Tooheys is a brewery in the suburb of Lidcombe, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It produces beers and ciders under the Tooheys and Hahn Brewery trademarks, and is part of the Lion beverages group which was acquired by the Japanese Kirin Company in 2009.

Tooheys dates from 1869, when John Thomas Toohey (an Irish immigrant to Melbourne) obtained his brewing licence. Toohey and his brother James Matthew ran pubs in Melbourne (The Limerick Arms and The Great Britain) before moving to Sydney in the 1860s. They commenced brewing Tooheys Black Old Ale in a brewery in the area of present-day Darling Harbour. By 1875, demand for their beer had soared and they established The Standard Brewery in inner-city Surry Hills. In 1902, the company went public as Tooheys Limited, and commenced brewing lager (the present-day Tooheys New) in 1930. In 1955, the brewery moved west to Lidcombe. In 1967, Tooheys bought competitor Miller's Brewers located in Taverner's Hill, closing that brewery in 1975.

In 1980, NSW-based Tooheys merged with Queensland's Castlemaine Perkins to form Castlemaine Tooheys.Bond Corporation purchased Castlemaine Tooheys in 1985.

Castlemaine Tooheys were represented as the appellants in the landmark 1990 case of Castlemaine Tooheys Ltd v South Australia, heard by the High Court of Australia. Since the brewery operated outside South Australia, but sold its products there, a South Australian Act Amendment, imposing a substantial refund value for non-refillable bottles produced in other states, was ruled to be inconsistent with section 92 of the Constitution of Australia. Due to the significant discriminatory and protectionist financial impacts that they faced, Castlemaine Tooheys successfully invalidated the law.
