The Chicago Pizza Pie Factory

The Chicago Pizza Pie Factory was a chain of pizza restaurants. The chain originated in Crown Passage (off Pall Mall) as The Chicago Pizza Pie Factory and was started by entrepreneur Bob Payton in 1976-7. The London establishment also had a bar. This was the start of a series of restaurants forming the My Kinda Town chain. The chain opened restaurants in places such as Paris and Barcelona, where they operated successfully for several decades. The Paris site now houses a Burger King.

When Payton sold the company in 1990 the business was pulling in a turnover of £35m.

PizzaExpress

imagePizzaExpress

PizzaExpress is a restaurant group with over 400 restaurants across the United Kingdom and 40 overseas in Europe, Hong Kong, India and the Middle East. It was founded in 1965 by Peter Boizot. In July 2014 the group was sold to the China-based private equity firm Hony Capital in a deal worth £900 million ($1.54 billion).

Founded in 1965 by Peter Boizot, PizzaExpress opened its first restaurant in London's Wardour Street. Inspired by a trip to Italy, Boizot brought back to London a pizza oven from Naples and a chef from Sicily.

In 1969 jazz performances began at its Dean Street restaurant, London.

PizzaExpress expanded into the Republic of Ireland in 1995 and currently operates 14 restaurants there under the brand name Milano. The company also owns the brand name Marzano. Originally Marzano was used in countries where the brand name Pizza Express was not available, as with the use of the name Milano in the Republic of Ireland, but it also exists in some territories, such as Cyprus, to differentiate between the restaurants selling primarily pizza and those offering a wider range of non-pizza meals inspired by Italy. It is also used for a cafe-bar run as an adjunct to the branch of Pizza Express in The Forum in Norwich, "Cafe Bar Marzano".

In 2011, PizzaExpress launched a major rebrand of its UK restaurants, with menu changes, a black and white logo and the widespread use of stripes, both for staff uniforms and for restaurant decor.

PizzaExpress was floated on the in 1993 with franchises opening across the UK. UK franchises were then bought back en masse in 1996. TDR Capital and Capricorn Associates then bought the company in 2003 turning it private again. In 2005, PizzaExpress floated on the London Stock Exchange, as part of the Gondola Holdings PLC. It was then bought by private equity group Cinven as the Gondola Group in 2007. On 12 July 2014 it was announced that Chinese group Hony Capital had bought PizzaExpress for £900m.

Pizzaland

imagePizzaland

Pizzaland is a chain of pizza restaurants which was owned by Associated Newspapers and then by United Biscuits. In the early 1990s, Pizza Hut and Pizzaland were regarded as the largest pizza eateries in Britain; UK business ceased in 1996. International branches continue to operate.

Pizzaland (Associated Restaurants) was founded in 1970 by David Dutton, financed by Associated Newspapers. The chain rapidly expanded throughout London, and then into the Northwest. The first restaurant outside London was opened in Deansgate, Manchester; from its northern/southern base Pizzaland grew into a chain of over 140 restaurants before United Biscuits acquired the company in 1980. Jullian Griffiths, Greg Barwick and Michael Stidolph were the senior managers responsible for the successful growth of the company in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1983, a total change in senior management and a change in siting policy, that often resulted in Pizzaland opening in towns that were too small to support them, started the decline of a once successful business.

In the late 1980s the chain aggressively tried to boost revenues with discount cut-out coupons in British tabloid newspapers; vouchers offering the same deals were often given directly to patrons for future visits. The most popular of these was the "pizza for a penny" scheme, whereby customers could purchase one pizza and obtain another of equal or lesser value for 1p. While initially a huge success, the offer had backfired by the mid 1990s since it became an expectation for customers, many of whom would no longer use the chain unless they could source a coupon beforehand. As such, the "pizza for a penny" strategy came to be regarded as a major catalyst in the demise of Pizzaland in the UK.

In November, 1996, Whitbread bought the Pizzaland group Brightreasons and converted Pizzaland into Pizza Hut. With many unrelated eateries subsequently assuming the "Pizzaland" name, and the chain being retrospectively confused with Pizza Hut, its legacy in the UK is now obscured. The branches also became Bella Pasta.

Prezzo ("price" in Italian) is a chain of Italian restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The first restaurant opened on New Oxford Street, London in November 2000. There are now more than 200 branches across the country. It is part of the Prezzo restaurant group, which also operates the Chimichanga, Cafe Uno, and Ultimate Burger chains.

It is one of several large Italian restaurant chains in the UK, with competitors including Ask, Pizza Express and Strada.

The first Prezzo restaurant was opened in central London by Jonathan Kaye, the company's chief executive, in 2000. There are now more than 280 branches in the UK which includes 23 restaurants opened under both the Prezzo and Chimichanga brands in 2015. Prezzo opened its first restaurant in Ireland in February 2016. Prezzo commonly converts old buildings of architectural value from their old purposes into Prezzo restaurants; examples include an old cinema in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.

The first owner of the Prezzo business, Jonathan Kaye, is the son of Reginald Kaye and nephew of Philip Kaye, both of whom have a background in the restaurant trade with the Golden Egg café chain in the 1960s and Italian restaurants Garfunkel's and Deep Pan Pizza, both now sold to Restaurant Group. In 2008 Jonathan hired cousins Adam Kaye and Samuel Kaye (sons of Philip Kaye) to join Prezzo plc's board of directors. Adam and Samuel founded Ask (restaurant) and Zizzi.

Prezzo donates a share of the profits raised from sales of selected dishes to the children's charity Fight for Life.

In 2011 the award-winning celebrity chef Aldo Zilli designed four pizzas which were added to the Prezzo menu under the name "V.I.Pizzas".
