Arch Deluxe

The Arch Deluxe was a hamburger sold by McDonald's in 1996 and marketed specifically to adults. It was soon discontinued after failing to become popular despite a massive marketing campaign and now is considered one of the most expensive flops of all time.

The Arch Deluxe was a quarter pound of beef, on a split-top potato flour sesame seed bun, topped with a circular piece of peppered bacon, leaf lettuce, tomato, American cheese, onions, ketchup, and a "secret" mustard and mayonnaise sauce.

In response to the demographic trend of longer lifespans and an expanding older market, and to its child-centered image, McDonald's made a conscious decision to attempt to market its food to a more adult audience. Rather than change its existing menu items or marketing strategy, the company decided to create a new line of sandwiches with what would hopefully be perceived as more sophisticated ingredients. It commissioned Executive Chef Andrew Selvaggio to create the Deluxe line of burgers including the Fish Filet Deluxe, Grilled Chicken Deluxe, Crispy Chicken Deluxe, and the flagship Arch Deluxe.

The Arch Deluxe was first tested as a "Taste of the Month" burger in October 1995 at McDonald's restaurants in Canada. Afterwards, the Arch Deluxe was officially released in May 1996 in one of the most expensive advertising campaigns to date. However, customers were dissuaded by the high price and unconventional ads, and consumer groups were upset by the higher caloric content. The brand was still sold at select restaurants during 1998 and 1999. On August 18, 2000, the Arch Deluxe was finally discontinued, and is no longer found at McDonald's stores today.

It is estimated that McDonald's spent over $300 million on the research, production, and marketing for the Arch Deluxe. The company stated in 2003 that some of its initial research into adult marketing was recycled in the development of its successful line of salads.

Big Mac

imageMcDonald's Big Mac

The Big Mac is a hamburger sold by international fast food restaurant chain McDonald's. It was introduced in the metropolitan area of Pittsburgh, United States, in 1967 and nationwide in 1968. It is one of the company's signature products.

The Big Mac was created by Jim Delligatti, an early Ray Kroc franchisee, who was operating several restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. It was invented in the kitchen of Delligatti's first McDonald's franchise, located on McKnight Road in suburban Ross Township. The Big Mac had two previous names, both of which failed in the marketplace: the Aristocrat, which consumers found difficult to pronounce and understand, and Blue Ribbon Burger. The third name, Big Mac, was created by Esther Glickstein Rose, a 21-year-old advertising secretary who worked at McDonald’s corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois. The Big Mac debuted at Delligatti's Uniontown, Pennsylvania restaurant in 1967, selling for 45 cents. It was designed to compete with Big Boy restaurants' Big Boy sandwich; Eat'n Park was the Pittsburgh area's Big Boy franchisee at the time. The Big Mac proved popular, and it was added to the menu of all U.S. restaurants in 1968.

The Big Mac consists of two 1.6 oz (45.4 g) 100 per cent beef patties, "special sauce" (a variant of Thousand Island dressing), iceberg lettuce, American cheese, pickles, and onions, served in a three-part sesame seed bun.

The Big Mac is known worldwide and is often used as a symbol of American capitalism. The Economist has used it as a reference point for comparing the cost of living in different countries – the Big Mac Index – as it is so widely available and is comparable across markets. This index is sometimes referred to as Burgernomics.

Chicken McNuggets

imageChicken McNuggets

Chicken McNuggets are a type of chicken product offered by international fast-food restaurant chain McDonald's, which they introduced in 1983. They consist of small pieces of processed chicken meat that have been battered and deep fried.

The Chicken McNugget is a small piece of processed chicken meat that is fried in batter and flash-frozen, then shipped out and sold at McDonald's restaurants. It was conceived by Keystone Foods founder Herb Lotman in the late 1970s.

McDonald's first executive chef, René Arend, created the Chicken McNuggets recipe in 1979. "The McNuggets were so well-received that every franchise wanted them", said Arend in a 2009 interview. "There wasn't a system to supply enough chicken". Supply problems were solved by 1983, and Chicken McNuggets became available nationwide.

According to McDonald's, the nuggets come in four shapes: the bell, the bow-tie, the ball and the boot.

As of August 1, 2016, the ingredients within the United States are as follows: White boneless chicken, water, salt, seasoning (yeast extract, salt, wheat starch, natural flavoring, safflower oil, lemon juice solids, dextrose, citric acid), sodium phosphates. Battered and breaded with water, enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), yellow corn flour, bleached wheat flour, salt, leavening (baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium aluminum phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, calcium lactate), spices, wheat starch, dextrose, corn starch. Prepared in vegetable oil (canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil) with TBHQ and citric acid as preservatives and dimethylpolysiloxane as an anti-foaming agent. McDonald's ingredients can vary outside of the US. McDonald's announced that its Chicken McNuggets are now free of artificial preservatives, a change that the fast food giant has been working on for about a year.

Deli Choices

Deli Choices is a line of sandwich rolls containing different fillings. The rolls were released by McDonald's in Australia and New Zealand on October 2004.

Each sandwich is prepared to order. The bread is toasted (toaster conveyor belt, similar to a pizza oven) prior to being prepared. Meat and cheese fillings are heated in several seconds using a quick-steamer (similar to the device used to steam buns for the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich and Filet-O-Fish). The Bacon & Egg roll and the Deluxe rolls are part of the breakfast menu.

Some stores in Australia are now baking their own rolls in their stores daily, as part of a new McCafe menu that involves baked biscuits. These baked rolls aren't toasted on a conveyor belt, but are kept in a warmer. Stores in Newcastle, NSW are currently trialing deli choices made on wraps, rolls are only available during breakfast; as of the 18th of February 2009, QLD has also changed over.

A similar sandwich called the McHero was on the menu in the early 90's, but was recently brought back annually starting in 2004 in franchises in the Cleveland/Akron metro area as the Cavaliers Triple Double. It was also offered there in the summer of 2002 as the Thome Triple in reference to then Cleveland Indians player Jim Thome. It was also marketed in the summer of 1995 in conjunction with the movie Batman Forever.

All healthier choice McDonald's deli-choice rolls had been discontinued by the firm in early 2009, with the remaining deli-choice breakfast roll cut from the menu in 2010. The former McDonald's breakfast wrap featuring bacon, egg, Swiss cheese and beef, has been replaced by a new variety of breakfast roll, on a bun, with the sausage replaced by a deep-fried potato-cake. The following healthier deli-choices, in Australia, no longer exist, nor have they been replaced with any similar options:

Served on a choice of wholegrain or white rolls. Stores in ACT and NSW are currently trialling wraps instead of rolls. Restaurants still sell the Bacon and Egg Deli roll, but the sandwich is only served during breakfast hours.

Currently, only the Southwest Chicken variety has been carried over, no longer served in a hoagie bun, but in a square ciabatta bun. In addition, the Chicken Classic sandwich has also been transferred over to this variety of buns. The Turkey BLT variety was originally on the Ciabatta menu as well, but has been discontinued.

Filet-O-Fish

imageFilet-O-Fish

The Filet-O-Fish is a fish sandwich sold by the international fast food chain store McDonald's. It was invented in 1962 by Lou Groen, a McDonald's franchise owner in Cincinnati, Ohio. While the fish composition of the sandwich has changed through the years to satisfy taste and supply shortcomings, the framework of its ingredients have remained the same; a fried breaded fish fillet, steamed bun, tartar sauce, and pasteurized processed American cheese.

As of December 2014, the Filet-O-Fish contains a battered, fried fish fillet made from Alaska pollock. In New Zealand and the United Kingdom Filet-O-Fish contains hoki instead of Alaska pollock. McDonald's Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Czech Republic, The Netherlands and Hong Kong uses a half slice of cheese in each Filet-O-Fish sandwich.

The sandwich was created by a McDonald's franchise owner in Cincinnati, Ohio, named Lou Groen in 1962. Groen owned a McDonald's in a predominantly Roman Catholic neighborhood where his Catholic customers engaged in the practice of not eating meat on Fridays.

The product was named by Cye Landy of Cye Landy Advertising Agency, which was the advertising firm for that particular McDonald's franchise.

Happy Meal

A "Happy Meal" is a form of kids' meal sold at the fast-food chain McDonald's since June 1979. A toy is included with the food, both of which are usually contained in a box or paper bag with the McDonald's logo. The packaging and toy are frequently part of a marketing tie-in to an existing television show, film, or toy brand.

The Happy Meal contains a main item (typically a hamburger, cheeseburger, or small serving of Chicken McNuggets), a side item (french fries, apple slices, or a salad in some areas), and a drink (milk, juice, or a soft drink). The choice of items changes from country to country, and may depend on the size of the restaurant.

In some countries, the choices have been expanded to include items such as a grilled cheese sandwich (known as a "Fry Kid"), or more healthy options such as apple slices, a mini snack wrap, salads, or pasta, as one or more of the options.

In most countries, McDonald's has introduced a "healthy option" to the Happy Meal. Children have always been able to choose milk with their Happy Meal and the chain added fruit juice drink instead of a soft drink, and bags of dried fruit (or a whole piece of fruit such as an apple or carrot sticks) in place of fries.

In some regions different names are used. In French Canada, it is called "Joyeux Festin" (literally meaning Happy Feast in Canadian French). In Latin America and Puerto Rico (not so in Spain) it is known as Cajita Feliz (Happy little box in Latin Spanish). In Brazil it is known as McLanche Feliz (Happy McSnack in Brazilian Portuguese).

In Japan, it was called Okosama Lunch from 1987 to 1988, then Okosama Set from 1988 to 1995 (Okosama is a polite word for "child"), before being renamed to Happy Set. In Germany, it was known as Juniortüte (Bag for Juniors in German) until 1999.

Kiwiburger

The KiwiBurger is a hamburger sold at McDonald's restaurants in New Zealand. It consisted of a four-ounce (113 g) beef patty, griddle egg, beetroot, tomato, lettuce, cheese, onions, mustard, and ketchup on a toasted bun. The burger was also sold in Australia under the name McOz but did not include an egg. The McOz was discontinued and replaced by the McFeast Deluxe, which has since been discontinued and replaced by the new range of Angus beef burgers.

The Kiwiburger was the idea of franchisee Bryan Old, who came up with the burger as a nostalgic take on the typical New Zealand hamburger prior to the introduction of McDonald's to the New Zealand market in 1976. Trialled initially in Old's five Hamilton restaurants, it was added to the national menu in 1991. The New Zealand ad for the KiwiBurger had a well-known song, consisting of 46 Kiwiana items, which was printed on the box for some time and was used in the TV advertisement.

It was discontinued in 2004 as it was unprofitable. The burger had ingredients that were not a part of any other product (beetroot for example), and the egg had to be cooked on a special grill which impeded operations (because of the temperature and timing).

The KiwiBurger was reintroduced to McDonald's New Zealand menu in May 2007.

In September 2007 McDonald's ran a "Vote KiwiBurger" advertising campaign to promote retention of the KiwiBurger (which, as of July 2008, was successful). In December 2008, the KiwiBurger was discontinued again, with the premise being the burger had gone on its "overseas experience".

In June 2009, McDonald's reintroduced the KiwiBurger to its restaurants again for a limited time. It was due to be removed from the menu at the close of business on Tuesday 25 August 2009.

The burger was reintroduced on 17 August 2011 as part of McDonald's promotional Kiwi Menu, introduced ahead of the Rugby World Cup.

Ahead of McDonald's New Zealand's 40th anniversary on 7 June 2016, the Kiwiburger returned to the menu in May 2016. The Big Mac also received a Kiwiburger-style box during the period, with the ingredients of the Big Mac ("two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun") instead of Kiwiana icons.

The original 1991 advertisement for the Kiwiburger can be found at Nga Taonga Sound & Vision. It was directed by Fane Flaws with music composed by Murray Grindlay.
