Candler Building (New York City)

imageCandler Building (New York City)

The Candler Building is a historic skyscraper located in Times Square, Manhattan, New York, New York.

The Candler Building was built between 1912 and 1914 by Coca-Cola magnate Asa Griggs Candler of Atlanta. It consists of a five bay, 24-story section fronting on 42nd street and a three bay, 17-story section fronting on 41st street. The main facade on 42nd street consists of a three-story base, a midsection from the fourth through 17th story, and a crown from the 18th to 24th story. It features white terra cotta a round arched windows on the 42nd street facade. It was one of the last skyscrapers built before the 1916 Zoning Resolution, which required setbacks.

During a scene in the 1978 film Superman, the Candler Building and the McGraw-Hill Building are clearly visible. The pre-expansion Port Authority Bus Terminal can also be seen near the McGraw-Hill Building. Its ground floor now houses a McDonald's restaurant.

This cityscape is dramatically different today, and the block and a half between the two tall and unique buildings is now filling with even taller towers (built, under construction, or proposed). The Candler Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Denton House (New Hyde Park, New York)

imageDenton House (New Hyde Park, New York)

Coordinates: 40°44′12″N 73°40′24″W / 40.736592°N 73.673333°W / 40.736592; -73.673333

The Denton House is a historic building in New Hyde Park, New York, within the Town of North Hempstead. Built in 1795 as a farmhouse, it was converted in the 1860s to a Georgian-style mansion. It is currently a McDonald's restaurant.

The building was built as a farmhouse for the family of Joseph Denton in 1795. The owners were descendants of Richard Denton, a Presbyterian minister who immigrated in 1630 and a founder of the town, and his son, colonist Daniel Denton. In the 1860s, it was converted into a Georgian-style mansion, with ornamentation.

The house ceased being a private residence after World War I, at which point it became a funeral home and then a series of restaurants.

McDonald's acquired the dilapidated property in 1985, intending to demolish it and build a standard structure. North Hempstead and residents of the New Hyde Park community successfully sought historic designation, and an agreement was reached with McDonald's to allow a single-story addition to the back for a drive-thru if the front exterior was restored to its 1926 appearance. The renovation included installing a series of windows for the veranda. Ornamentation, window shutters, and brick chimneys remain. The inside was gutted in the process, including exposed rafters. A grand staircase leads to a dining area on the second floor.

Landmark designation was not formally given by the Town of North Hempstead until January 5, 1988.

Frontier House (Lewiston, New York)

imageFrontier House (Lewiston, New York)

Frontier House was home to several Niagara County businessmen and honored guests. It was considered to be a premiere hotel in its day. The house is recognized as a landmark and a structure on the list of National Register of Historic Places listings in Niagara County, New York since 1974. The structure has served as a hotel, private home, a fine dining restaurant, museum, and a fast food establishment (McDonald's). It is found in Western New York, about ten minutes from Niagara Falls.

The Frontier House, built in 1824, is situated at 460 Center Street, Lewiston, New York, of Niagara County and was hailed as the best hotel west of Albany. Prominent business men of Lewiston, Benjamin and Samuel Barton along with Joshua Fairbank headed the building of the tavern. Its walls were shaped with stone from Canada by 18 men over 18 months. As the structure was erected, Lewiston attracted more people than the city of Buffalo, New York. The structure when completed stood four stories high. Its rectangular shape, double parallel chimneys, oval windows, full-width porch and hipped roof is characterized as the Federal style of architecture The first floor served as offices, the second was a luxurious ballroom. The third floor included fourteen bedrooms with fireplaces and the fourth floor was used for meetings, famously for free masons. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic places on July 8, 1974.

Dewitt Clinton, President William McKinley, Samuel Clemens, Charles Dickens, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John L. Sullivan and Jenny Lind were all honored guests of the Frontier House. In the 1800s ten coach trains arrived and departed from the Frontier House hotel daily carrying these among other influential people.

Hamburger University

Hamburger University is a 130,000-square-foot (12,000 m2) training facility of McDonald's, located in Oak Brook, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. This corporate university was designed to instruct personnel employed by McDonald's in the various aspects of restaurant management. More than 80,000 restaurant managers, mid-managers and owner/operators have graduated from this facility.

Today, Hamburger University is situated on an 80 acres (32 ha) campus with 19 full-time resident instructors. The facility comprises 13 teaching rooms, a 300-seat auditorium, 12 interactive education team rooms, and 3 kitchen labs. Hamburger University interpreters can provide simultaneous interpretation, and the faculty has the ability to teach in 28 different languages. Restaurant employees receive approximately 32 hours of training in their first month with McDonald's and more than 5,000 students attend Hamburger University each year.

Founder Ray Kroc oversaw lessons at its beginning. Although Kroc died in 1984, he appears in videotaped lectures that are still used at Hamburger University.

Hamburger University was satirized in the 1986 comedy, Hamburger... The Motion Picture. It was also spoofed by McDonald's itself in a commercial with Ronald McDonald where a bunch of animatronic hamburgers are shown graduating from school.

McBarge

Coordinates: 49°17′35″N 122°58′47″W / 49.293036°N 122.979797°W / 49.293036; -122.979797 The McBarge, officially named the Friendship 500, was a McDonald's restaurant, built on a 187-foot-long (57 m)barge for Expo '86 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Moored on Expo grounds in Vancouver's False Creek, it was the second floating McDonald's location in the world (the first being in St Louis, Missouri), intended to showcase future technology and architecture. Although the floating design allowed for the barge to operate in a new location following the exhibition, the derelict McBarge has been anchored empty in Burrard Inlet since 1991, amid industrial barges and an oil refinery.

Disused and forgotten for years, the barge was the centrepiece of a failed proposal for a waterfront development on the Fraser River in Mission, British Columbia, including a restaurant and marina.

The restaurant was designed by Robert Allan Ltd. for Expo 1986 and was one of five McDonald's locations on the Expo grounds, all of which were constructed for a total of $12 million. It was initially intended to be used as a McDonald's restaurant after Expo '86, but the barge remained empty at the Expo grounds until 1991, when the new owner of the grounds forced McDonald's to remove it. It has since been anchored derelict in Burrard Inlet, north of Burnaby, British Columbia.

McComplex

McComplex is a proprietary factory outside Moscow which is owned by McDonald's. It was built before the company opened its first branch in Russia. In the Soviet Union, there were no private businesses which could supply the 300 ingredients needed by a McDonald’s outlet. All ingredients needed to be made from scratch at a sprawling factory.

Private businesses in Russia now supply 80 percent of the ingredients in a McDonald’s, a reversal from the ratio when it opened in 1990 and 80 percent of ingredients were imported. Starting with pickles, which now come from a private farm, every item has been spun off from the nine production lines at McComplex, leading to dozens of new businesses being created, some now some of the most successful in the Russian food industry. Buns and pies are still made at the McComplex site, but by an independent contractor. The building is for sale.
