Rimsky-Korsakoffee House

imageRimsky-Korsakoffee House

Rimsky-Korsakoffee House, located in the Buckman neighborhood of southeast Portland, Oregon, in the United States, is one of the city's oldest coffeehouses. Named after Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, the classical music-themed coffeehouse serves coffee and desserts, operating from the former living room of a reportedly haunted 1902 Craftsman-style house. Goody Cable started the business in 1980, having hosted classical music events in her home for years prior.

Rimsky-Korsakoffee has a casual, communal atmosphere and sometimes features live classical music. The house is decorated with knickknacks, art and hanging objects. Tables are named for various composers; some of them are "haunted" (animated), at times elevating, rotating or vibrating. The coffeehouse has received a generally positive reception and is known mostly for its desserts and for offering a unique experience to guests. Rimsky-Korsakoffee has been called "eclectic", "quirky" and "spooky", and has been recognized by several publications for its coffee and desserts.

Named after Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Rimsky-Korsakoffee was one of Portland's first coffeehouses. The classical music-themed business, located in Portland's Buckman neighborhood, serves coffee and desserts. It operates from the former living room of a reportedly haunted Craftsman-style house, built in 1902 and "nearly hidden from view" by the surrounding foliage. In 2006, The Oregonian's Vivian McInerny suggested that writer Louise Bryant once lived in the house. Bryant and her second husband, John Reed, documented parts of the Russian Revolution in works such as her Six Months in Red Russia. However, evidence analyzed by Michael Munk for publication in Oregon Historical Quarterly and elsewhere lends no support to the idea that Bryant ever lived at 707 Southeast 12th Avenue (Rimsky-Korsakoffee House's street address) and casts strong doubt on the idea that she met Reed there.

Satori Coffee House

Coordinates: 30°41′23.71″N 88°10′9.58″W / 30.6899194°N 88.1693278°W / 30.6899194; -88.1693278 Satori Coffee House is a combined coffee house and music venue located in Mobile, Alabama.

It is located on 5460 Old Shell Road near the campus of the University of South Alabama. The majority of the customers are college students and faculty. Local art displays and open mic nights have provided students with a creative space and outlet.

Most of the coffee comes from Roasters Gallery in Atmore, AL. In addition to coffee drinks and sandwich items, alcohol is served and can be combined with the coffee.

The design of the floor layout is intentionally homey, with a few different rooms furnished with a mix of tables and chairs. Additional seating can be found on a large half-covered front porch area.

The business opened in 1998 as a record store called Satori Sound in a small, 1940s-era cottage styled house. In 2002, after records sales declined, the business diversified by converting part of the building into a coffee shop. Finally in 2004, the record side of the business closed.

The Shelter Half

The Shelter Half was a GI Coffeehouse in Tacoma, Washington that operated at 1902 Tacoma Ave. from 1968 to 1974. Named after a military tent called a Shelter-half, the coffehouse's purpose was to provide a place for GIs at Fort Lewis military base in Washington State to resist the war in Vietnam. The Shelter Half served as an anti-war headquarters, publishing underground anti-war newspapers, organizing boycotts, connecting civillian activists with local GIs, and leading peace marches.

In November of 1969, the Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board prevented military personnel from attending the coffeehouse by placing it on a list of off-limits places.

The Shelter Half closed in the summer of 1974.

Stealth Starbucks

A stealth Starbucks is a Starbucks coffeehouse which does not advertise the Starbucks brand. These stores are operated in Metropolitan areas to do market research on how customers react to experiments in coffee service and coffeehouse design.

The stores do not exhibit the icons of the Starbucks brand, including the siren logo, the green aprons for baristas, and the odd Starbucks' specific "tall, grande, venti" coffee size terminology. The door of the coffeehouse says, "Inspired by Starbucks".

The first Stealth Starbucks opened in 2009. In that year, at least three stores in Seattle were de-branded to remove the logo and brand name, and remodel the stores as local coffee houses "inspired by Starbucks." CEO Howard Schultz says the unbranded stores are a "laboratory for Starbucks". The first, 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea, opened in July 2009 on Capitol Hill. It served wine and beer, and hosted live music and poetry readings. It has since been remodeled and reopened as a Starbucks-branded store in 2011. Another, Roy Street Coffee and Tea at 700 Broadway E., also on Capitol Hill opened in November as a "Tudor-style coffeehouse". Although the stores have been called "stealth Starbucks" and criticized as "local-washing", Schultz says that "It wasn't so much that we were trying to hide the brand, but trying to do things in those stores that we did not feel were appropriate for Starbucks."

The second floor of Macy's Herald Square in New York City has a non-branded Starbucks store, called the Herald Square Cafe.

People in Chicago said that they would not welcome a stealth Starbucks in their city.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

imageStumptown Coffee Roasters

Stumptown Coffee Roasters is a coffee roaster and retailer based in Portland, Oregon, United States. The chain's flagship cafe and roastery on SE 45th and Division opened in 1999. Three other cafes, a roastery and a tasting annex have since opened in Portland as well as two locations in Seattle, two in New York, one in Los Angeles, and one in New Orleans. In August 2012, the company moved its headquarters to a building in Portland's Central Eastside Industrial District. On October 6, 2015 it was announced that Peet's Coffee was buying Stumptown. Peet's Coffee is itself a part of JAB Holding Company of Luxembourg, owners of coffee companies Caribou and Jacobs Douwe Egberts, as well as luxury brands such as Jimmy Choo. It is expected that Stumptown will benefit from Peet's expertise at logistics as the company grows larger.

The business practices and quality standards of Stumptown Coffee Roasters have led to them being recognized as having "revolutionized the coffee business" and helped "refine coffee drinkers' palates" in Portland. Founder Duane Sorenson and Stumptown Coffee Roasters have been credited as being part of the third wave of coffee movement.

Sorenson, and his employees, in pursuit of the best quality coffee spends considerable time visiting farms in person and is willing to pay high prices for coffee he deems worthy—occasionally three or four times the fair trade price. He once set the record for highest price ever paid for coffee beans. Sorenson is known for forming lasting relationships with coffee producers.

The owner has offered atypical perks to his employees such as paying for a compilation album to be produced of their various bands, and hiring a full-time on-staff massage therapist. They have received numerous awards, including Roaster of the Year 2006.
