Burger Fuel

imageBurgerFuel

BurgerFuel is a New Zealand burger restaurant with 88 locations in six countries (plus 1 mobile location unit), including 54 locations in New Zealand. BurgerFuel sells burgers (beef, chicken, gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian) Spud (Potato) fries, kumara fries, bottled soft drinks, thick shakes and its own branded ice cream.

BurgerFuel burgers are known for their aioli sauce and flavor, and for its licensed Doofer, a folding cardboard burger-holder. BurgerFuel as a gourmet burger chain focuses on many niche areas: Items such as vegan / vegetarian food, gluten-free, free range, halal, as well as some organic food products. BurgerFuel has been careful to try to make their menu healthier than a lot of their competition (by reducing salt, sugar, preservatives and additives). Burger names have an automotive theme.

BurgerFuel also has a unique sides menu, including spud and kumara fries, along with their Motobites (crumbed pumpkin and ginger bites), and Chicken Fenders (grilled free-range chicken tenderloinds with rosemary and sea salt seasoning). Along with soft drinks, the sides menu also includes their own brand Thickshakes, and ice cream.

The menu features a regular rotation of special promotion burgers, and promotion sides.

In 1995 the first Burger Fuel was opened in Auckland. In 2007 Burger Fuel Worldwide publicly floated on the NZX. The company directors were hoping to generate $15 million from the IPO; however, they ultimately raised a little over a third of that.

On 5 May 2008, Burger Fuel Worldwide announced it had agreed to its first Master franchise agreement with Dubai based Al Khayyat Investment Group Investments LLC. They set up, and operated stores in Dubai, UAE by the end of the year. Dubai is considered to be a high-profile city for BurgerFuel. There are two BurgerFuel stores in Al-Khobar, and 3 branches in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Georgie Pie

imageGeorgie Pie

GEORGIE PIE LOGO.png

Georgie Pie was a fast food chain owned by supermarket operator Progressive Enterprises that hoped to be "New Zealand’s own homegrown alternative to the global fast-food industry giants such as McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Burger King." The first Georgie Pie restaurant opened in 1977, and at its peak there were 32 restaurants across New Zealand. After running into financial difficulties, it was bought out by McDonald's in 1996, mainly for its restaurant locations. The last Georgie Pie store was closed in 1998.

In 2013, McDonald's started selling Georgie Pie again through its restaurants after frequent calls for the brand's return. However, there are no plans to open dedicated Georgie Pie stores.

Georgie Pie was the brainchild of Tom Ah Chee, who opened New Zealand's first supermarket (Foodtown Otahuhu, 1958). The first restaurant was opened in Kelston, Auckland in 1977. In 1994, plans were announced to open 25 new outlets per year, with a goal of 114 operating restaurants by the end of 1998. The chain came to prominence in the early 1990s with its $1, $2, $3, and $4 "Funtastic Value" menu, including the popular $1 "Small Pie." At its peak, the chain employed about 1,300 people. Georgie Pie was able to automate the food production process far more than chains which sold labour-intensive items such as burgers. Timing was a more difficult detail, for Georgie Pie, as it took 22 minutes to bake a pie versus a few minutes for typical fast food.

Large pies at Georgie Pie came in a range of traditional (mince n' cheese/steak n' kidney) and exotic (Chinese/Mexican/Italian) flavours. The pastry was distinctively solid and free of flakes to avoid spills and mess. These large pies were round, encased in paper sleeves and sold in small, unique boxes. The sleeve allowed the pie to be eaten without being directly touched with the hand. Small pies, which had a distinctive square shape, were sold in bags. Fruit pies had a smaller round shape. .

Hell Pizza

imageHell

Hell Pizza is a New Zealand-based pizza chain. Hell began in New Zealand in 1996 next to Victoria University, and has expanded within New Zealand and to the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, Korea and India.

Hell Pizza is owned by Callum Davies and Stuart McMullin. In 2006, Hell sold the New Zealand Master Franchise rights to Tasman Pacific Foods (the NZ master franchisee for Burger King) for NZ$15,000,000. The NZ Master Franchise rights were purchased back from Tasman Pacific Foods in 2009. In August 2011, founder Warren Powell left Hell Pizza New Zealand and in July 2014, he left Hell Pizza International. There are 64 Hell stores nationwide in New Zealand, Australia has a store in South-east Queensland and Canada has one store in North Vancouver.

The Hell theme is used in the menu. Seven standard pizzas are named after the seven deadly sins.

The company is notable for its offensive advertising and for being the first company in New Zealand to offer online pizza ordering, in 1996. They sponsored a segment on the television show Pulp Sport.

A radio advertisement that featured a humorous conversation about Hell attracted one complaint in New Zealand. The Advertising Standards Authority ASA did not uphold the complaint since "it did not reach the threshold to be likely to cause serious or widespread offence".

Hell Pizza used the expression "sell your soul" in mass advertising in 2013 in New Zealand. It received one complaint to the ASA that "This flippant attitude towards something that many New Zealand citizens ... believed to be significant and consequential..." The ASA ruled that there were no grounds to proceed, since "sell your soul" is a common saying and recognised as dark and satirical. Hell also purchased the soul of a 24-year-old Wanganui man for $5001, after the online auction website Trademe withdrew his attempt to sell it there.

In November 2008, while under management from Tasman Foods, Hell Pizza New Zealand apologised for an advertisement featuring skeletal remains of Sir Edmund Hillary, Heath Ledger, and the Queen Mother, dancing on gravestones. The apology was to Hillary's family, which complained the ad was in "extremely poor taste". The ad was withdrawn from the company website on 3 November.
