Ditsch

imageBrezelbäckerei Ditsch GmbH

Ditsch is a German chain of pretzel bars also selling croissants and pizza snacks. It operates approximately 200 outlets in Germany but also has at least one outlet in the United Kingdom.

In 1919, master baker Wilhelm Ditsch founded a bakery shop in Mainz.

The founder’s son, Heinz Ditsch, also a master baker, took the bakery into its second generation. He perfected his father’s recipe, and soon Ditsch pretzels were famous well beyond the borders of Mainz. In order to meet the growing demand, “Pretzelmen” in white clothing were walking around Mainz and offering fresh pretzels in baskets in the streets and restaurants. In the mid-1970s, Heinz Ditsch specialised in the manufacture of his very successful pretzel pastries.

His son, Peter Ditsch, grew up knowing about his father’s business activities. The qualified businessman took over his parents’ company in the third generation. He realised the trend towards outdoor consumption and fast food.

The manufacture of soft pretzels and other specialties as raw frozen pieces of pastry allowed him to set up a growing network of shops and to sell oven-fresh Ditsch bakery products throughout Germany. Today’s Ditsch shops, which are all in first-class locations, are run by independent agency partners. Furthermore, because of its more than 90-year-old tradition and collected know-how, Ditsch has become a competent partner for commercial customers and food retailers.

Administration of this family business, which today has more than 400 employees, is based in Mainz, next to the first production facility. A further production site in Oranienbaum (Sachsen-Anhalt) was built in 1999.

Ditsch now has around 200 outlets in Germany mainly in railway stations, shopping centres and pedestrian zones.

Nordsee

imageNordsee Fischspezialitäten GmbH

Nordsee is a German fast-food restaurant chain specialising in seafood. In addition to selling raw and smoked seafood, the company also sells a wide variety of meals and products prepared from seafood such as Fischbrötchen (fish sandwiches), salads, and canned seafood. The company formerly supplied its own seafood but has since sold the fishery.

Nordsee was founded in 1896 to supply seafood from the North Sea to the residents of Bremen. In 1964 the company opened restaurant type retail shops offering meals prepared from seafood in addition to raw seafood. This concept, known as Nordsee Quick, was a huge success as nearly 300 shops opened within 2 years. In 1998, the company sold the fishery division known as Deutsche See to allow for more focus towards seafood retailing. The new focus was demonstrated with the introduction of locations serving smaller, quicker takeout meals in the following year.

In 2005 the company was sold to Kamps Food Retail Investments and Nomura International. The company underwent restructuring and experienced a growth in profits five times greater than expected in the first year. In response to a new emerging market, the company introduced sushi and a number of other higher quality food products the following year and has begun to move into other sectors of the food industry with success.

Nordsee restaurants are usually located in populated areas such as city centers or near airports and train stations. The company focuses primarily on Germany and Austria but operates additional locations in the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, Hungary, and more recently, Cyprus, Dubai, Egypt, Bulgaria, Turkey and Russia. As of 2007, there are over 400 Nordsee franchises operating in Europe alone. Nordsee has formed a partnership with IHS International Ltd., a Middle Eastern company (Ocean Fresh), and plans to open 150 additional locations throughout the Middle East.

Wienerwald (restaurant)

imageWienerwald Franchise GmbH

Wienerwald Franchise GmbH is a German franchise chain of fast-food restaurants with stores in Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Hungary, United Arab Emirates and Romania specialised in Hendl, Schnitzel, and also other chicken products. Its name means Vienna Woods.

Founded in 1955 by Linzer restaurateur Friedrich Jahn (1923 - 1998) in Munich, it rapidly grew up to Europe's largest chain of fast-food restaurants with more than 1600 restaurants in 1978. By 1978, Wienerwald purchased the 273-restaurant Lum's chain from former Kentucky Fried Chicken owner John Y. Brown, Jr.. The chain's inability to market themselves as a provider of good tasting chicken (rather than overcoming the US misconception that "Wienerwald" was a wiener chain), plus their huge growth in 1978 brought enormous debts. Many of the restaurants in the USA and Europe were forced to close; Wienerwald declared bankruptcy in 1982, divesting itself of its 880 restaurants in the United States.

In 2007, Friedrich Jahn's daughters Margot Steinberg and Evelyn Peitzner purchased the company and Wienerwald started a new era. In June 2009, the first Wienerwald in Turkey was opened in Istanbul. The first Romanian restaurant in Bucharest was opened in April 2011. As of 2012 there were 30 restaurants in Germany (15 in Bavaria) compared to 19 restaurants in Turkey (Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa, and Antalya), three restaurants in Romania (Bucharest) and three restaurants in Egypt (Cairo).
