Cara Operations

imageCara Operations Ltd.

Cara Operations Ltd. is a Canadian company that provides catering services to airlines and operates several restaurant chains including: Harvey's, Swiss Chalet, Kelsey's, Milestones, East Side Mario's, Montana's and St-Hubert. Its headquarters are in Vaughan, Ontario in the Greater Toronto Area. It used to be headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. In November 2008, the company moved to its new headquarters in Vaughan, Ontario near Vaughan Mills shopping centre.

In 2002, sales for the whole company were C$1.9 billion. 88% of the business comes from the restaurant services with the remaining 12% deriving from airline catering.

The name Cara was derived from the first two letters of each of the words "Canada Railway"; it is also an Irish word meaning "friend".

It was chartered in 1883 as Canada Railway News Company selling newspapers, magazines and confectionaries at railway stations. The company's roots go back to the mid-1850s when Thomas Patrick Phelan was selling fruit and newspapers to train passengers between Hamilton and Buffalo. Canada Railway News soon moved into the food business, catering to a boom in passenger rail traffic in Canada.

In the 1930s, Cara began offering catering services to the airlines. By 1951 it was serving about 1,500 meals a day.

In 1961 the company changed its name to Cara Operations Limited.

Cara was owned solely by the Phelan family from its inception in 1883 until it went public in 1968. At the time, its primary business was catering to the transportation sector (airline and rail meals), but it did operate a few 'no-name' restaurants and coffee shops in various office towers and airport terminals in Canada. Total sales of all the various operations was C$30 million in 1968.

Kelseys Original Roadhouse

imageKelseys Original Roadhouse

Kelseys is a Canadian Roadhouse restaurant chain headquartered in Vaughan, Ontario owned by Cara Operations. Cara Operations also owns other restaurants including Swiss Chalet, Milestones, Montana's and Harvey's. Founded in 1978, there are restaurants across Canada, excluding the province of Quebec (where the chain was withdrawn in 2008).

Once a chain of more than 140 locations from Quebec westerly to British Columbia; the company has closed all but 2 locations in British Columbia; shuttered 9 locations in Alberta; closed all locations in Saskatchewan; all locations in Manitoba have also closed. In Ontario, numerous locations across the company have closed including locations in Kitchener, Simcoe, and Fort Erie. The Owen Sound location was due to close on December 20, 2013. As of November 2013 there are just 88 Kelseys locations left in Canada, primarily in the Province of Ontario.

Kelseys has a licensing agreement through early 2011 with CBS Consumer Products for the rights to the theme song from the 1980s sitcom Cheers, which the chain says could lead to "other opportunities" in the future. Kelseys also uses the show's title in its slogan "Cheers to good friends", although (due to the generic nature of the word "cheers" in regards to pubs and the like) it is not clear whether permission from CBS was required for this.

Kelseys' parent company Cara Operations has been going through an era of rebranding and renovations including its location located at 1011 The Queensway Etobicoke, Ontario where the company is piloting a new restaurant design that features an emphasis on a newer style of Kelseys dining experience. Many under-performing Kelseys restaurants have been closing down over the past couple of years and the new design is going to change the customer's eating experience to become more lively and exciting. The restaurant's old slogan "Neighbourhood Bar and Grill" has been upgraded to "Ambitiously Hardworking and Sociably Unpredictable". Bright neon colours are found throughout the restaurant along with an upgraded menu that features a smaller and more limited selection of the most popular items found at other Kelseys locations. The new bar menu that was first used at this Kelseys is now available throughout all 88 locations in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. The new bar menu is modeled after its location in Etobicoke featuring bright neon colours along with new items that reflect more of a Pub than a Bar and Grill. The restaurant design is going to be applied to more locations when the franchisees choose to upgrade.

St-Hubert

imageSt-Hubert BBQ

St-Hubert BBQ Ltd is a chain of Canadian casual dining restaurants best known for its rotisserie chicken. St-Hubert once had a presence throughout eastern Canada, but it now has few locations outside its home province of Quebec, where it remains a dominant chain. Other locations are found in Ottawa, Cornwall, Rockland and Hawkesbury in Ontario, and Edmundston, Bathurst, Moncton and Fredericton in New Brunswick. St-Hubert is the 16th largest restaurant chain operating in Canada.

In March 2016, St-Hubert agreed to be purchased by Cara Operations, the owner of the rival Swiss Chalet rotisserie chicken chain, for $537 million. Cara increased its restaurant presence in Quebec as the St-Hubert chicken deal closed in September 2016.

The first restaurant opened in September 1951 on Saint Hubert Street in Montreal, just south of Beaubien street. The founding family of Hélène et René Léger copied similar barbecue restaurants in that city. This branch still operates today, but has been converted to a St-Hubert Express take-out restaurant. The company website claims its free home delivery was a first in Canada.

By the 1970s, St-Hubert had become the major restaurant chain it is today. The chain enjoys the highest customer loyalty of any restaurant in Canada, excepting Tim Hortons, according to industry analysis.

The original St-Hubert Chicken mascot was created and designed by Disney animator Jack Dunham. Dunham also produced St-Hubert's first television commercials. However the current St-Hubert mascot, which has been in use since the early 1970s, was not created by Dunham.

Swiss Chalet

imageSwiss Chalet

Swiss Chalet is a Canadian chain of casual dining restaurants founded in 1954 in Toronto. As of 2008, there are over 200 Swiss Chalet restaurants in Canada. Swiss Chalet is among the holdings of Cara Operations, which also owns the fast food chain Harvey's. Swiss Chalet and Harvey's franchises share many locations.

Swiss Chalet franchises include a variety of points of sale. Swiss Chalet locations generally include a dining room, a take-out counter, and delivery. Some feature drive-thru windows while other locations in certain urban areas are only take-out counters and are more akin to fast food restaurants. The brand also has an online food ordering system. Cara Operations retails Signature Swiss Chalet sauce, gravy, and marinades (as powdered mixes) in Canadian supermarkets.

There was only one Swiss Chalet in Puerto Rico, until it later closed in 2011.

The first Swiss Chalet restaurant, at 234 Bloor Street West in Toronto, operated for 52 years. The building featured exposed-beam ceilings in the Swiss chalet style. This store closed in 2006 and was demolished in 2009 as part of a condominium development.

In the early 2000s, Cara Operations closed all of its Quebec based restaurants and permanently withdrew from the province.

Swiss Chalet returned to Saskatchewan with a location in south Regina, although this location no longer shows on their website. In 2008, Air Canada added Swiss Chalet food products to its buy-on-board menu.

In 2010, the last two Swiss Chalet restaurants in the United States closed. They were located in the suburbs of Buffalo, New York. On June 1, 2011, the only Swiss Chalet restaurant operating in Puerto Rico closed its doors.
