The Yamaha YZF-R3 is a sport motorcycle manufactured by Yamaha since 2015. A first on Yamaha twins (the other being R25), the R3 uses an offset cylinder design.
The Yamaha R3 is an entry level sport motorcycle,it is designed to compete with rivals in 300cc segment such as Kawasaki Ninja 300. It is designed as a well balanced sport motorcycle, with some design similarity to R25, such as engine (which is bored out). With a low seat height, the well positioned windscreen sufficiently deflects the wind overhead. The 321 cc performance oriented engine is lightweight, powerful, and has a wide power band. Still, most of the power can be found from 7000 rpm to redline (10500 rpm approx) which makes overtaking very easy while cruising at 75 mph. The engine uses a downdraft induction fuel injection system for easy startup and the 10-spoke wheels are made up of cast aluminium to reduce unsprung weight. The all-aluminium cylinders are designed for the purpose of dissipating heat quickly. For 2017, the YZF-R3 offers the option of ABS which costs approx. $300 more than the standard variant.
The bike has the ability to reach 0–60 km/h (0–37 mph) in less than 3 seconds, and 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 5.5 seconds. The 2015 R3 has a braking distance of 131.5 feet from 100–0 km/h (62–0 mph). While Indian reviewers praised the handling, same cannot be said for some western world reviewers. According to some reviewers, the braking system is not powerful enough to match the engine power, and is also prone to fishtailing under hard braking (non ABS). However, the engine braking can be used to assist deceleration, as the stock bike does not have a slipper clutch. Minimal adjustable suspension is considered another downside on the bike. However, compared other bike in the segment, it is considered finely tuned and sufficient.
Yamaha R3 competes directly with Kawasaki Ninja 300. Other competitors in entry level (sub-400 cc ) bikes include Kawasaki Ninja 400, Honda CBR300R, and KTM RC 390.
