Dennis Herrick is an American author best known for his historical novel Winter of the Metal People: The Untold Story of America's First Indian War, which gives the Pueblo point of view about the Tiguex War and the Coronado expedition.
For most of his career, Herrick worked in the newspaper industry. He has been reporter, owner and publisher. He is an emeritus member of the journalism faculty at the University of New Mexico. He is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and other awards while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division in 1969. He has been editor of the newsletter for the Vietnam Dog Handler Association since 1999, and is a member of the Western Writers of America.
