Watgunge is a neighbourhood of South Kolkata in Kolkata district in the Indian state of West Bengal.
Watgunge is named after Colonel Henry Watson (1737-1784), who set up the first dockyard in Bengal.
Colonel Watson started building the shipbuilding docks in 1779 in the present Watgunge area.
Watgunge was included in the Kolkata municipal area in 1888.
In 1888, one of the 25 newly organized police section houses was located in Watgunge.
Watgunge police station is part of the Port division of Kolkata Police. Located at 16 Watgunge Street, Kolkata-700023, it has jurisdiction over the police district which is bordered on the north by Tolly’s Nullah from Hastings Bridge to Zeerut Bridge (the Nullah included) ; on the east by Belvedere Road, Alipore Road and Strendale Road (the roads excluded); on the south by Circular Garden Reach Road from its junction with Satya Doctor Road up to its junction with Dr. Sudhir Bose Road (Circular Garden Reach Road excluded between Satya Doctor Road and Dr. Sudhir Bose Road), then by Dr. Sudhir Bose Road and its junction with Diamond Harbour Road, then by the eastern limits of Diamond Harbour Road to its junction with Strendale Road; and on the west by Satya Doctor Road, Sasthitola Road and Garden Reach Road (roads included).
Watgunge Women police station, located at the same address as above, covers all police districts under the jurisdiction of the Port division i.e. North Port, South Port, Watgunge, West Port, Garden Reach, Ekbalpur, Nadial, Rajabagan and Metiabruz.
