Walnut is a city in Crawford County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 220.
Walnut was originally called Glenwood, and under the latter name laid out in 1871. In 1874, it was renamed Walnut after the Little Walnut Creek, on which it is located.
The first post office at Walnut was established in April, 1873. Prior to April, 1877, the post office's name was officially called Walnut Station.
Walnut is located at 37°36′01″N 95°04′33″W / 37.600359°N 95.075867°W (37.600359, -95.075867). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.00 square mile (2.59 km2), of which, 0.99 square miles (2.56 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Walnut has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.
As of the census of 2010, there were 220 people, 84 households, and 57 families residing in the city. The population density was 222.2 inhabitants per square mile (85.8/km2). There were 108 housing units at an average density of 109.1 per square mile (42.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.8% White, 1.8% Native American, 0.5% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.6% of the population.
