His best-known successes were at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, where he won a gold medal for the Soviet Union in the individual large hill event, and at the Holmenkollen ski festival, where he won the ski jumping competition twice (1968, 1970). He became the Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1968 and won the USSR Championship in 1969. In 1978 he graduated from the Military Institute of Physical Culture and worked as a trainer.
