Vellerat is a municipality in the district of Delémont in the canton of Jura in Switzerland.
Vellerat is first mentioned in 1741 as Vellerat. Vellerat was allowed to leave canton Bern and join canton Jura after a 1996 nationwide vote.
Vellerat has an area of 2.04 km2 (0.79 sq mi). Of this area, 0.53 km2 (0.20 sq mi) or 26.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.44 km2 (0.56 sq mi) or 70.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.07 km2 (17 acres) or 3.4% is settled (buildings or roads).
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.0%. Out of the forested land, 66.7% of the total land area is heavily forested and 3.9% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 3.4% is used for growing crops and 13.7% is pastures and 8.3% is used for alpine pastures.
The municipality is located in the Delemont district.
The municipalities of Bourrignon, Châtillon, Courrendlin, Courtételle, Delémont, Develier, Ederswiler, Mettembert, Movelier, Pleigne, Rebeuvelier, Rossemaison and Vellerat are considering a merger on at a date in the future into the new municipality with an, as of 2011[update], undetermined name.
