Van Meter is a city in Dallas County, Iowa, United States, along the Raccoon River. The population was 1,016 at the 2010 census, with an estimated population in 2014 of 1,133. Van Meter is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Van Meter was laid out as a town in 1869. The city was named for Jacob Rhodes Van Meter, a local settler. Van Meter was incorporated on December 29, 1877.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.30 square miles (3.37 km2), of which, 1.28 square miles (3.32 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.

Van Meter is situated west of Des Moines, just south of Interstate 80.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,016 people, 382 households, and 280 families residing in the city. The population density was 793.8 inhabitants per square mile (306.5/km2). There were 415 housing units at an average density of 324.2 per square mile (125.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.9% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.6% Asian, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.6% of the population.

There were 382 households of which 45.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 26.7% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.09.
