V. Kumar is the Regents Professor, Richard and Susan Lenny Distinguished Chair & Professor of Marketing, Chang Jiang Scholar, Lee Kong Chian Fellow, ISBM Senior Fellow, executive director for the Center for Excellence in Brand & Customer Management, and the Director of the Ph.D. Program in Marketing at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, Atlanta, USA. On July 1, 2014, he was named the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Marketing published by the American Marketing Association(AMA).
Kumar was born in Chennai, India. His mother worked as a telephone operator and his father was a clerk in the Indian Railways. Both parents instilled in him the value of higher education and encouraged him to become an engineer. On their advice, he entered the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) of Madras. After graduating with a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), he continued his education in the M. Tech Program in Industrial Management at IIT-Madras. It was here where Kumar discovered his interest in Marketing. Motivated by his professor, he then moved to the United States to do research on Quantitative Marketing in the Ph.D. program in Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin.
Kumar has published over 250 articles in leading academic journals including the Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, Journal of Marketing, Management Science, Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Operations Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Retailing, International Journal of Forecasting, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Direct Marketing, Marketing Letters, and the Journal of International Marketing as well as in the proceedings of many national conferences in the U.S and abroad. He has authored 15 books which have been published in 6 languages around the world. His works have also been referred in numerous books and book chapters, research reports and case studies.
