Thierstein (district)


Thierstein District is one of the ten districts of the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland, situated to the north of the canton. Together with the Dorneck District, it forms the Amtei (electoral district) of Dorneck-Thierstein. It has a population of 14,403 (as of 31 December 2015).

Thierstein District contains twelve municipalities, with Kleinlützel existing as an exclave.

Thierstein has an area, as of 2009, of 102.16 square kilometers (39.44 sq mi). Of this area, 41.41 km2 (15.99 sq mi) or 40.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 53.36 km2 (20.60 sq mi) or 52.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 7.04 km2 (2.72 sq mi) or 6.9% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.15 km2 (37 acres) or 0.1% is either rivers or lakes and 0.2 km2 (0.077 sq mi) or 0.2% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 4.0% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.0%. Out of the forested land, 49.3% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.9% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 34.0% is used for growing crops, while 1.9% is used for orchards or vine crops and 4.6% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the district is flowing water.

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms is Or a Doe Gules stantant on a Mount of 3 Coupeaux Vert.

Thierstein has a population (as of December 2015) of 14,403.

Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (12,376 or 91.8%), with Italian being second most common (212 or 1.6%) and Albanian being third (176 or 1.3%). There are 119 people who speak French and 16 people who speak Romansh.
