The Walt Disney Company Argentina S.A. is an Argentine media company headquartered in Olivos, Argentina. It is owned by The Walt Disney Company through Disney Enterprises, Inc.
The company was founded on July 7, 1990 by Francisco Javier Irarrazaval Alfonso (then responsible for Disney's consumer products and licenses) and Jorge Otamendi. Disney Argentina was the first subsidiary of Disney in Latin America.
In 2000, Buena Vista Film Productions (Latin America) S.A. partnered with Telefónica Media and Artear to operate Patagonik Film Group (each company with 30% of the capital).
In 2001, the company took over the operations of Buena Vista Columbia Tristar Films of Argentina S.A., Buena Vista Film Productions (Latin America) S.A. and The Walt Disney Studios (Latin America) S.A.
In 2007, Disney and Artear acquired the shares of Telefónica Media in Patagonia Film Group and later sold those shares to Cinecolor and Pol-ka.
In early 2007, Jamaican businessman Maxim Emile St. Patrick Higgins (Max Higgins) released a project to build a Disney theme park (called Walt Disney Mundo) in the city of San Pedro; however, on October 23, Disney denied his involvement in the project. Subsequently, Higgins was sued by Disney Argentina for violation of the Trademark Act of Argentina. Previously, Higgins had cases in the United Kingdom and the United States for repeated scams. In June 2013, the case was prescribed.
In November 2013, some media reported that the National Communications Commission (CNC) had granted Disney Argentina a license to provide telecommunications services (as a phone operator and internet provider), but it was clarified that the company was registered on the RAMATEL (part of the CNC) to commercialize the video game Disney Infinity.
As of 2007, the channels Disney Channel and the current Disney XD are commercialized by ESPN Sur S.R.L.
