The Plains is a census-designated place (CDP) in Athens County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,080 at the 2010 census.
"The Plains" originally referred to the local region where the Mound Builders lived and built their signature Indian mounds. A post office called The Plains has been in operation since 1908.
The Plains is located at 39°22′13″N 82°7′56″W / 39.37028°N 82.13222°W (39.370281, -82.132299).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles (5.9 km2), of which 0.0077 square miles (0.02 km2), or 0.28%, is water.
A nature preserve was created in The Plains recently by the Athens Conservancy. An extension of the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is planned to traverse the preserve and provide bikeway access for the community.
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,931 people, 1,224 households, and 714 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,275.8 people per square mile (492.0/km²). There were 1,344 housing units at an average density of 585.0/sq mi (225.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.13% White, 2.42% African American, 0.31% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 0.27% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.82% of the population.
